Help with the family name: Bennett
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 22:25 BST (UK) »

Hi, I was wondering if anybody could offer any help or advice...

I've not been researching my family tree all that long...about two months, but I've not done too bad, and have managed to identify all lines of my family back to the 5th Generation, and some back to the 6th. However I'm somewhat stuck on the line with the above surname.

I'm really struggling to obtain any real info on my Great-grandfather Joseph Bennett, born in 1895/6, and can't seem to find a likely entry in the 1901 Wales Census. My family know very little, other than he was born in Wales, Swansea to be precise and "he lived by 'The Mumbles'.

I've sucessfully obtained a copy of his marriage certificate from 1920 to Mary Hughes (From Liverpool), which confirms his approximate age and his relocation to Liverpool. It also states that he was a Ship Maker's Labourer, and that his father was also Joseph Bennett, a Steel Worker.

Furthermore, he fought in, and survived WW1, and I've not had any luck in finding his details on the War Pension Database. He was however poisoned by Mustard Gas, which left him in ill health until his death around about 1930ish.

I would have thought that this was quite a decent amount of information from which to find something more than I actually have!!

Any ideas on any other avenues I can pursue?!

Just to add to the above:

The family is transcribed as Bonett in Ancestry and Joseph was born in Pontadawe.

Hi Paul and a Warm Welcome to Rootschat  Grin

This is interesting 'cos my initial reaction was that if the census was correct regarding ages Joseph had to be a twin, however...

?? Bennett, Daughter, 6, Montardawr?, English

Having looked at the census page I think this child's name is Teresa.  Now in Pontardawe in the Qtr. to June 1895 there is the birth of a Theresa Bennet registered, but no Joseph.

However there is the birth of a Joseph Alexander Bennett recorded in Pontardawe in the December Qtr. of 1893, making him 8* in 1901  Huh

There are 7 Medal Index Cards for Joseph A Bennett's at the National Archives, but still no sign on the Pensions Database.

Wendi  Smiley

* Edit: as the Census was taken on the 31st March 1st April 1901 he would actually have not have had his 8th Birthday by then.

Afternoon!

This lead sounds extremely promising!!! Pontardawe is indeed within the Mumbles area, plus the following seems to tie in....

a.)My Grandfather was called Joseph  Bennett, who himself was a twin....furthermore, his sister is called Teresa too.

This sounds like it could be the correct family!

Many thanks for your help!!!

Regards

Paul

ps. As I said, I'm relatively new to this, I take it, if you're struggling to find an entry by surname, you just vary the spelling for common/obvious mistakes/transcription errors?

Yes, and if that doesn't work you can take out the surname altogether and search on first name, age and birthplace.  It usually helps to search on the most unusual of the given names in the family to minimise irrelevant results.

Mumbles must be about 10 - 15 miles from Pontardawe. Both are villages on the edges of Swansea but I'd not call them close.

I think the Swansea street referred to is Pentre Estyll.

Joseph comes from Newery and Johanna comes from Waterford

1891 Census

They are living in Cwm Level Road, Landore with the three elder children.

Cwm Level road still exists

Evening,

A big thanks to all those who've gone to the trouble of helping me out! This really has helped me out loads!!

A quick question though.....

I know they are both Irish but a Joseph Bennett married a Johannah Bedley in Swansea in Q1 1886.

Ref: Vol 11a, page 816

How did you manage to find this out?!! I've been puzzling over how to determine spouse's maiden names via the BMD. I've had some limited success due to in-laws residing with their offspring.

How were you able to find the matching entry for the female partner?Huh Am I missing something relatively straightforward here? Let's put it down to inexperience eh? Ha ha.

Thanks again for the help!!

Paul,

On Ancestry free BMD:

I punched in "Joseph Bennett", "Swansea, Glamorgan" - an educated guess; and a few years plus/minus before their first child - another educated guess

Went through the results and the was a Joseph Bennett on the same page as a Johanna Bedley.

I am not saying this is the correct marriage. That's for you to decide. But it's a good pointer, I think.
