Stuart / Collins
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 04:09 BST (UK) »

Further to my previous posting, I found this on the Natal's who's who site:

Stuart: John Baptist, Farmer, b 16th August 1862(the six was a bit blurred) in Lower Umkomaas, Alexandra county; son of Thomas Stuart of Glasgow Scotland, married 3 November 1897, Miss Mary Collins: 4 children, Education Hilton, was a Lieut B.M.R.  Hobby Shooting, Add Jolivet, No 2 Highflats.

If anyone could add any additional information to this family I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks
Sharleen

Hi Sharleen

Excuse me for asking the obvious, but have you checked the National Archives?

I can see what looks like John's Death Notice in the Pietermaitzburg Archive;

SOURCE    MSCE
REFERENCE 19727/1924
DESCRIPTION          STUART, JOHN BAPTIST.
STARTING  1924
ENDING    1940

as well as their divorce;

SOURCE    RSC
VOLUME_NO 1/5/339
REFERENCE 127/1922
DESCRIPTION          ILLIQUID CASE. DIVORCE. ANN MARY STUART (BORN COLLINS) VERSUS JOHN BAPTIST STUART.
STARTING  19220000
ENDING    19230000

Then there is also this file;

SOURCE    RSC
VOLUME_NO 1/5/384
REFERENCE I144/1929
PART      1
DESCRIPTION          ILLIQUID CASE. MEE LOUIS ROUHIER VERSUS WILLIAM JAMES IVINS AND FRANK EDWARD OSBORN IN THEIR CAPACITIES AS TRUSTEES UNDER THE ANTE NUPTIAL CONTRACT BETWEEN JOHN BAPTIST STUART AND ANN MARY STUART (BORN COLLINS).
STARTING  19290000
ENDING    19310000

Hi Moira

My apologies, I did find the first two but not the third.  Can you explain the starting and ending dates to me.   In my mind it appears that it took 16 years to finalize his death notice.

I have just found out this morning that the sons of John Baptist Stuart and Ann Mary Collins were as follows:

John Baptiste Stuart who married Engread Orthildia Bergset
Sydney Thomas Stuart who married Ruth Honeybun
Wallace Stuart married ?
Mabel Stuart married ?

I guess I will go back to Naairs to try and find them.

I am also trying to find Daisy Stuart and SL Collins who is listed on the marriage certificate.  My feeling is that it is either John Snrs mother or sister, could also be an in law.  I was also told today that he supposedly traveled to SA with three brothers.  One brother apparently went on to Australia.  I will check Naairs for them.

My idea here is that if anyone is looking into this family or connected in any way I would appreciate them contacting me.

Many thank
Sharleen

Hi Moira

Just to add to my note earlier, thank you for reminding me to go back to Naairs.  I got the original two documents almost 2 years ago and had forgotten about them.  Today I spent most of the day on Naairs plodding through the history of JB Stuart.  I can just with dates and the comments on the summary sheet put together a bit of the history of his life.  That doesn't help with parents but it does add a bit of color.

I also managed to pick up a death notice for my husbands grandfather, also JB Stuart (jnr) and JB's brother Wallace Dunbar Stuart.

I am going to keep plodding along with this family.
Many thanks
Sharleen
