Adaware Etc
« on: Wednesday 30 May 07 09:53 UTC (UK) »

I confess I don't know how programs work but I run Adaware, Spybot and Spyware Terminator.

Spyware Terminator launches its self on bootup but if I then run the other two programs, they each bring up further threats. My question why doesnt Spyware detect them all? And why does each program find a differnt threat? I'm confused Huh

Try this link to Wikipedia:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware

It probably tells you everything that you want to know (and a lot that you probably don't  Wink)

Hi Indaloman,
I also run several and they too give different results.
I usually change the order in which they run and the 3rd one usually
says congratulations no threats were found.
I think it all depends on what they perceive as a threat. Most
of what they find are cookies most of  which are of little danger.
If you take advantage of the "free" scans on the internet they
usually find hundreds of faults etc.  This is to panic you so that you
buy their product.   Just make sure that you update your Anti-Virus and
Spybot etc. and you should be O.K.
         Regards,
         Tomkin Grin

Hi Tomkin,

Thanks for coming back to me. I am glad to see that you have the same results as myself. As you say, different programs see threats in a different way. The worst I had was when Sypware Blaster shows a serious threat which I deleted only to find that my Legacy program no longer worked. It took me several days to work out that the perceived threat were vital files for the running of Legacy and it wasn't until I contacted Legacy that they confirmed several spyware programs saw these what I was told were standard windows files, as potential threats.

Many of these so-called anti-spyware programs do detect false positives which are not actually spyware at all.

There was the famous or infamous case of McAfee anti-virus identifying excel.exe (Microsoft's famous spreadsheet program) as a virus.  There are plenty of other examples too.

To be honest, spyware is not really a threat to your computer.  Spyware is usually a tracking cookie that simply sends information about websites you visit to a commercial company.  That information is of interest to advertisers so that they can target people with specific advertisements.

What you should be concerned about are virsuses which have the potential to do your computer some real harm, although that is rare.

Spyware is relatively trivial, and so are the programs that detect it to some extent.

All I can say when running antimalware programs like Adaware and Spybot is to exercise extreme caution. If you disable/delete the wrong thing some programs can stop working and worst case scenario is that you can actually stop your machine booting up which may mean a trip to a repair shop depending if you know anyone who can fix it for you.

A few times in the past I've been called in to fix a broken PC because someone has run antimalware software.

If anyone is experiencing weird things happening with their computers I can take a look but it will involve chatting on MSN.

I just can't stand computer shops who charge silly amounts of money to clear out the computer which is a simple job. I know having the knowledge of what to do is most of the fee but I still don't agree with the prices some companies set.
