Hi Milly

The way that I add link in a separate page is to:

Highlight my link
Go to Text Properties
and Under Options pick Link button
Link type should be External link
type the site URL in
Target I change to Pop up window and then go to Edit and click Full screen

Hi Guys,

I've been working on my Family Tree Site...or rather I started but found it's a lot harder than I expected. With so much info I can't even decide where to begin...by family names - or places - or chronological... Or maybe just do individual stories and sort it out later.

I've kind of decided to go more for the stories around the people and background info on places and the things they might have done or been involved in rather than just names and dates and a tree as such but other than that I keep changing my mind.

Any advice to get me going?

 Grin Grin
I've gone for the option of the stories.  My first website had the whole tree, but so what? I want to get to know some of the characters that shaped my ancestry so I have chosen to tell stories about characters as find out interesting information about them piecing together what I find and I am also adding places.

My Middlesex families I added maps showing the addresses they lived at from all the census returns and BMD certificates.  It far more important for me to get to know these characters than to see a tree charting back 19 generations or whatever.

That's what I was thinking... it's a huge job sorting all the info out and actually finding a starting point... and deciding on a structure. All your sites look so organized...I'm so impressed with the amount of thought which must have gone into them. Grin

Mine may look organised but believe me it's not!  It gets added to as when I have a new idea, a new thought, new information on another character and it is as evolving as my tree Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Milly

My site is on about it's fourth reincarnation Grin Grin Grin. I started by just putting down everything I had and then started to sort it out a bit. I have gone for a mix of stories, trees & bits and pieces. My trees are in a separate progamme - GedHTree - which can be accessed from my site.

I am happy (sort of Roll Eyes) with the layout I have now. There are a couple of tweaks I am fiddling with at the moment so it'll change again soon but I think none of us are ever 100% happy with them  ??.

That's why we keep adding a bit here, taking a bit away, etc.

Don't forget to add your website into your profile then, when you publish it, we can have a look and give you feedback. (it will come up as a small globe under your avatar on all your posts then.

Good luck

I'm just wondering whether to publish now - in all it's lack of glory - or to leave it till it's more polished.

Depends on why you are building your site, Milly.    Is it for your family, or is to try and make connections with others?

As it looks like you are focusing on stories and the like you may find starting with this and directing your family to the site, you could generate more material from them.  So that would suggest putting it up earlier rather than later.

The danger is that you always perfect, perfect, and perfect again, and never publish  Roll Eyes

Whatever, good luck with it  Smiley

Thanks Julian... Yes - it's more about bringing the tree to life by putting people and places and photos  together to create a feel of the times... but I suppose people might contact me..I hadn't thought of that Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I think I've decided on the basic shape and it has a bit of content in it - so I think I'll tidy it up and publish so you guys can take a look - I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Now....what to call my website???  Oh so many decisions Grin Grin Grin

Hello Milly  Smiley

I spent ages writing and re-writing my stories - as you might find on various threads here  Grin

In the end, I was forced into writing in the old way, with paper and pencil, because of a power cut. I just sat and wrote down the story of my families as if I was telling an interested friend and it just seemed to flow.  I filled in the refs and census, BMD details later.

I've got lots more stories to tell - one very special and long one about ancestors moving from Scotland to Wales.

Hi NOF club

If you have a look at my homepage http://baldwin.rootschat.net/ you will notice that for some unfathomable reason my navigation on the homepage seems to be very low res.  Can you see what I mean?

I have had a look and can't see why the buttons should suddenly be low res, or why they should be different from any other page.  The navigation bar seems to be pointing at the same images.

Does anyone know why this has happened or have any ideas how I can get it back to high res?

Hi Gadget

That page was last loaded about 21 June and I'm glad you agree they are fuzzy.  I was beginning to think it was me except that the other pages seem to be fine.
