Lumsden
« on: Friday 01 June 07 16:48 BST (UK) »

My g.grandmother was Mary Lumsden 1856-1922 born in Blyth, married to Alexander Donkin 1850-1903.  Her parents were John Lumsden 1832 born in Blyth and Jane (unknown) c1833 from Benton.
I have found Mary with some siblings, but cannot find anything regarding her father's family.
Can anyone help?

Hi Kath,

Given they have Courtney boarders in both 1861 and 1871*, I quite like this marriage for a start:

June quarter 1853
John Lumsdon to possibly Jane Courtney
Tynemouth 10b 216

Cool

*give me a shout if you need the details

I'm lost in Genuki  Tongue Can anyone tell me whether Blyth and Cowpen are close?  Tongue

There's a John Lumsden age 18, coal Miner on the Cowpen 1851 census, born Cowpen

Trying to answer my own question: I think the answer is yes.
For Blyth it says: see under Horton and Earsdon

Horton
Quote
"HORTON is a parochial chapelry comprising the townships of Bebside. Cowpen, Hartford East, Hartford West, and Horton, whose united area is 5,550 acres. It is bounded on the north by the river Blyth, on the west by the parish of Stannington, on the south by Earsdon parish and Cramlington chapelry, and on the east by the parish of Earsdon and the port of Blyth.

Earsdon:
Quote
Earsdon, a parish comprising the townships of Backworth, Blyth and Newsham, Burradon, Earsdon, Hartley, Holywell, Seaton Delaval, and Sighill, is bounded on the north by Bedlingtonshire, on the west by Long Benton, Cramlington, and Horton, on the south by Tynemouth, and on the east by the German Ocean.

Hi Tati
Thanks for that information. I shall look into it.  I shall also check the census you mention, as I haven't seen that one before.

Can't resist the Cowpen/Blyth angle.

Growing up straddling the borders of the ancient parishes of Horton and Earsdon, Blyth was the new boy on the block with no sway or antiquity.

The north and western part of what is today the town of Blyth was in the ecclesiastic "township" of Cowpen. ( The then term "township" related to an area, a sub-division of a parish, and did not relate to a town)

Cowpen was the largest "township" of the five within of Horton parish.

The southern part of Blyth lay in the "township" of Newsham ( later renamed Newsham and South Blyth) one of the eight townships that made up Earsdon Parish.

This old  boundary in Blyth of the two parishes is today marked by Plessey Road and Union Street.

In reply to Tati's question about whether Blyth and Cowpen ARE close?.  Then, Blyth lay WITHIN Cowpen("township"), as also did Cowpen village, Cowpen Newtown, Cowpen Quay and three of the four pits all called Cowpen Colliery)

Now there are no such things as ecclesiastical "townships" and Blyth ( as Blyth Valley Borough) has gobbled up all it's nearby elders.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

John Lumsden on C1851 ( 2412-411-49) lived in South Pit Houses. The South Pit was one of four pits in the area, which were all called Cowpen Colliery. This "South Pit" was also called the "A" Pit... and it lay in Blyth.

Blyth modern street  Bolam Avenue and Blyth Sports Centre are on ground that was the colliery yard and cottages of this pit.

Web site  communities.northumberland.gov.uk
( >Blyth>Ordnance Maps>1860 etc) shows streets adjacent to the pits. As well as old photos of Blyth)

Hi Janis
Thanks for Charlotte's baptism infor.  Have you ever spotted where William and Mary were married?  I have only looked at the Horton documents so far.
