Challenor from Cheshire. COMPLETED
« on: Monday 04 June 07 09:59 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to trace a Joseph Challoner b 1807c in Cheshire. According to the 1871 census he gives the place name Haward, I've had a look at the original and it could be Herewood, well, anything really.
I have found a Joseph Choloner xtened 11.01.1806 in Frodsham so I suppose my question is , is there a part of Frodsham called something like Haward?
(He wasn't too fussy about the spelling of his name, I've found xtening details for 5 of his children and Challoner is spelled differently every time Roll Eyes)
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

Nothing matching or even like that place name in Cheshire.
The Joseph Challenor born Frodsham, appears in the later census as being born Kingsley, which is right for Frodsham parish.

As you say the 1871 could read as anything, there is no place of birth in the 1861, and I have cut a small section of the 1851 census page and posted it below, maybe someone will reconise it.

I've found a Hawarden, which also seems to have a Welsh sort of name in Flintshire. Do you think it likely he got the county wrong? Do you sense straw clutching? Oh well, phone the RO tomorrow.

Joseph Challinor baptised 16 April 1815 in Hawarden, Flint. Parents Thomas Challinor and Ann Thomas - any use?

10 minutes later - Just found him in 1871 in Crewe so probably not yours - sorry!!!

Another try - BVRI has Joseph Chalinor bap 16 April 1811 s/o Joseph Chalinor and Margaret at All Saints, Handley, Cheshire. Handley is on the Whitchurch road just north of Whitchurch. PR's are at Cheshire RO.

Hi Challo, I still haven't tracked down my Joseph but he's not the Hawarden one. Thank you for your kind offer though.

Hiya .Barbara..I have had a very similar dealing with this before..
might it be HALEWOOD...the reason I say this is because I live very close to Hale Halewood....Hale is a very old village and Halewood developed from it ...Challenor is known in Hale / Halewood .this is registered in the Prescott office...I don`t know whether this was classed as Cheshire or Lancashire in 1801 ...you`ll have to check it out...but it might solve your query...I`ll trawl freebmd and if I find Joseph Challenor death of the right dob and it is registered Prescott we may have the answer.....allan Wink

ADDED....no joy on freebmd....Barbara..I have found the member who posted about the Challoner / Challinor family....go to the members list and look for Lloydy.....and send a PM about your research....you never know , you may have a connection...she usually posts on the Shropshire threads....good luck...allan

Hi Allan, thank you very much but Joseph died in Shropshire, since posting this thread back in '07 I've found out that Joseph spelled his name Challnor but it ended up as Challoner by time my grandma was born.
I was in contact with Lloydy a while ago but I'm touched by the fact you've been to all this trouble. Thank you.
