As far as I can see we are looking for an 1851 John to fit between Bryants' 1841 entry:
1841 BROCKMORE, KINGSWINFORD, STAFFS EMMA TONKS 25 Y MARY " 8 Y JOHN " 6 Y WILLIAM " 3 Y
and the 1861 from the original posting
1861 Brockmoor John Tonks,head,30,engineer at ironworks,Hadley,Worcs Elizabeth Tonks,wife,31,New Town,Montgomeryshire Eliza Tonks,dau,7mths,Brockmoor Kingswinford,Staffs Samuel Tonks,nephew,6,Kidderminster
I can't find any of the 1841 people in 1851. Could they have been off on a boat trip? And I don't understand why, if this is the same John in '41 and '61, does he give his birth place Worcestershire (around Stourport area) if he and all his siblings were bpt Brierley Hill and he grew up in Brockmoor

The 1841 census is the correct John and Emma. The John and Elizabeth above of the 61 census is a red herring. I need to locate John and Emma Tonks in 1851. I have recently found that their son, Reuben born 1852, was living with relatives in 1861.
Thank you very much for looking
Bob

I've also searched 1851 for them, no luck.
Perhap's like some of my boatmen ancestors they were missed off census due to the nature of their occupation.
Good luck and plenty of it!
Jackie.

Alli Thanks for looking. Bob
Jackie You have found the corect family. Joseph died at about 2 weeks old. William is the only one I have ever traced. He was also a boatman and I have followed his history until his death in 1900 at Malkins Bank Cheshire. My G Grandfather Reuben was born 1852 in Brockmore and lived with his Uncle and Aunt in West Bromwich until he married in 1877. He was not a boatman.
Thanks for looking

Emma Tonks , 1841 Census, is my GG Grandmother. She was christened Emma Beddall in 1814 at Brierley Hill. She married John Tonks in 1828 at St thomas Dudley.
All the birth records of the children Mary John William etc show John as a Boatman.
My G Grandfather, Reuben Tonks, was born in Brockmore in 1852.
Can you see John and Emma in the 1851 census?
Bob
A little off-topic, sorry, but I have a question regarding John Tonks baptised in St. Thomas Dudley: Have you traced his Tonks family before this? My ancestor Thomas Gwinnutt/Gwinnett Tonks was baptised in St. Thomas Dudley in 1829 to a William and Mary Tonks, I wondered if my William and your John could have been related? Twenty four years later William was a brass finisher, I don't know if he would have been back then though, does it ring any bells?
Thanks,
Matthew
