Thanks to both of you I am not sure about the Ada E Saint I have come across her a couple of times but the dates don't match up to the person I am looking for. If she is my g grandmother she would be living in Hawes in1888 and have a baby daughter.
Thanks again for all your help

John Chapman to possibly Ada Louisa M Clarke

Will check if I can see a matching Ada on previous census  Smiley

LOL, why so? Not something that necessarily runs in the genes, I suppose  Grin

What did you know about Ada in the first place? Was there any reason for you to think she was Ada Saint?

I think this Ada really looks likely but maybe it would be useful to get hold of Eva's birth certificate for confirmation?

PS Let us know if you want us to try to trace the Clarke family back a little in the meantime (mother was Julia Elizabeth Hammond)

I found John Chapman on Ancestry and it gave his wifes name as Ada born in Ashburn Derbyshire I worked out her birth year from the age given in the census.Spent about 4 hours trawling thru births in that year and came up with 2 Adas born in Ashbourne none at all in Ashburn. Then I set about eliminating one of them. Ada Saint seemed to be a better option as the Chapmans were farmers and she came from a farming family. the problem was I couldn't get them together at the right dates Not very scientific I know but it has worked before.I think you are right about Eva's birth cert I have found the refs and I will send for it.The Clarkes sound like a good bet for a bit more digging don't you think?
All the best

Ada Clarke really seems to fit the bill. Ada Saint never gives her birthplace as Ashbourn on census, and we've eliminated her now anyway ...

Have you found the Clarkes, or would like help?  Smiley
