There is an excellent (and of course free ) piece of sofware that will run on your free RootsChat webspace, it's called PhpGedView.
What does it do? Well put very simply, it allows you to upload your GEDcom file (that family history software produces) - so you can show your tree to the world! (It allows you to do a whole lot more than that too)
See: http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/'
We've uploaded a copy of it too here, just to show it does run fine on the webspace: http://phpgedview.rootschat.net/
Basically,you download the software: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpgedview/
The installation instructions are here: http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/installation.php
(apart from that you'll also need to delete your "RootsChat holding page" that says your webspace is ready which is index.html)
The bit that goes wrong for most people is the part of the installation that says: "Set write permissions on config.php and the "index" directory.". If you havn't a clue what that is then don't worry - please let me know and I'll try and help you (or I can tidy up that bit from this end).
For support on phpGedView please go to the phpGedView site, as I don't have much of a clue about it really.

Some tips for installing phpGedView:
- Go to Trystan's link, http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpgedview/
click on "Download phpGedView" This will bring you to a table of "latest file releases"
| Package | Release | Date | | Download | | 1 phpGedView | phpGedView 3.3.8 | December 31, 2005 | | Download |
Click on Download
- You will now have a page of mirror sites, which have copies of phpGedView.
Choose the one nearest to you
- The download package phpgedview.3.3.8.zip is 5.4 MB
- Create a directory (folder) phpgedview on your computer
You probably already have a folder on your computer with your website files, so this is the best place to create the new folder.
- Unzip the contents of phpgeview.3.3.8.zip into this folder
You will then have "13.5 MB in 1491 files in 51 directories"
- Look in the phpgedview folder, you will see a file readme.txt.
This is the installation instructions (same as the online version in the links above). It's probably worth printing out the first 5 (of 13) pages and keeping them handy
To save space and uploading time, you can delete some files (or move them "somewhere safe", rather than deleting them, preferably to a directory with the same structure as phpgedview, so you know where they came from, if you decide later that you do want to upload them)
You can move/delete - most language files. The Installation instructions, *A, para. 3 tells you which files you need for each language. The languages folder is 5 MB in 97 files. It varies according to language, but english for instance, requires 367 KB, approx 7% !!
Even if you decide to keep all languages (for international visitors to your website), you can still delete the two .txt files in the language directory
- Upload the complete directory phpgedview (or at least those bits you are keeping) to a directory phpgedview on your webspace
And to quote something I said in another posting: BUT ....
Dont even think about uploading phpgedview with the RootsChat file manager
Use an FTP program, see, for instance, Topic: Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website 6b Using an FTP program http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397246.html#msg397246
You now have phpGedView on your website. The next step is to configure it .....

Configuring your phpGedView
- Before starting to configure your phpGedView (PGV) you need to set some permissions
- for the file config.php in the phpgedview directory. Set permissions to 777 - for the folder index in the phpgedview directory. Set permissions to 777
You can use the RootsChat webspace File Manager for changing permissions: Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website 6a. Using the RootsChat File Manager FTP http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397245.html#msg397245
- point your browser to your PGV folder
i.e. type http://your-website.rootschat.net/phpgedview/ Substitute your website name for your-website
You will be presented with a form to fill in. This is, in fact, already filled with default options, which you can accept as given here, and just click on Save Configuration (not sure of the exact wording, my version comes up automatically in german)
- The next form will ask you to log in as administrator, giving a name and passwort. Fill this in and click on Click here to continue
- Follow the next instructions to load your GEDCOM file
That's almost it ! You should now have a working version of phpGedView on your site. You now need to add a link from any page (or pages) to your phpGedView directory. In HTML this could look like this:
<a href="./phpgedview/index.php" target="_blank"> phpGedView</a> the target="_blank" is optional and means that the phpGedview will open in a new window.
the phpGedview in this bit: .... _blank"> phpGedView</a> is the bit that appears on your webpage as a link. Change the text to suit yourself
And that's is now it !! You have phpGedView on your website, for all to see
If you have problems, please add your feedback here: Topic: phpGEDview install problems http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,151164.0.html
