Ellough Hall
« on: Thursday 07 June 07 09:58 UTC (UK) »

I have an ancestor who lived in Ellough Hall, Suffolk, from 1779, she must have left there before 1803 when she married elsewhere.
Is Ellough Hall the same place as the Ellough House I found on google, and what was Ellough Hall in 1779, was it a grand home or a workhouse or a farmhouse
A great site and great people on it!

Looks like it's a working farm today. (try a google search).

This is the address:

In 1844 Ellough Hall is listed as the home of farmer Samuel Holmes.

It is a tiny parish, about 150 people living there, so it is likely that House/Hall are one and the same.

I have checked all the listings in
Suffolk Houses
 Study of Dometic Architecture
by Eric Sandon FRIBA RSA

No mention of it in there at all - so looks like most likely to be a farm house (but a grand old one  Grin

On my modern Ordnance Survey map of the area, it show Ellough Hall and there are a lot of buildings, suggesting quite a big farm today.

There is a Local History Recorder for the parish, I will PM you the email address to contact her.

Thank you both for your very quick replies. I will contact the address given and get the answer, many thanks. I just love looking at the lovely history where my ancestors came from - our history in New Zealand is only about 200 years old and I cannot imagine 1000 years of history!

Thank you to all for your replies about Ellough Hall, I am awaiting a reply from the recorder of the Suffolk Local History Council, it is just curiousity about what it was in the time my ancestors lived there. I know that one died in Bulchamp House which I thought was a grand mansion and it rurned out to be a poorhouse. All great history!

No doubt you now know all about the Workhouse at Bulcamp  Sad

Just in case anyone else is looking for help from Local History Recorders in parishes throughout Suffolk (where the scheme originated) -

Local History Recorders record the events of today for the historians of the future

However, many are interested in what has been going on in their village/parish in the past and are willing to help.

For more details please check out the web site for Suffolk Local History Council at www.slhc.org.uk

Or contact me PM and I will see what I can do to assist.

Hi SM

Funnily enough, I have an interest in the Bulcamp Workhouse myself - one of my ancestors perished there in the 1840s, but no-one seems to know where the burial registers were deposited. (He wasn't buried in his native parish). Any thoughts?

Hello Dave,

I have never had to do any research at Bulcamp, but there was certainly a chapel and burial ground there - if the burial records are not at the SRO I wonder if they came under the records at Blythburgh Holy Trinity ?

I expect you know that Simon has a page on Bulcamp on his churches web site?

Hi, I too had ancestors who lived at Ellough Hall.  I am a 4th generation NZ'er and would like to find out more about them.
My mother has a painting of a family;  mother, father & children
including a set of twins who were apparently our ancestors and they are sitting in the parlour of Ellough Hall.
I believe my great-grandmothers maiden name was Willson and
she was born in NZ, therefore her parents must have emigrated
as they were born in the UK.
I will be travelling to the UK either 2008 or 2009 and would like
to visit Ellough.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I too have ancestors who were married at Ellough Hall, and had the surname Willson and ended up in New Zealand. Their names were John Willson and Mary Copeman and they married at Ellough Hall on 18th Sept 1803, is this your connection too?

Hi ya Ruskie, thanks for that and for the welcome.  No, plans have changed and haven't managed to get there yet, but its still in the pipeline.  Have been to the UK a few times but not to Suffolk, wanting to gather a bit more info about the ancestors before I come.
I need to ply some more info from my mother about them, and talk to her about
the names that Zubayda has mentioned, the dates could be about right.  Maybe we are related?
Will keep you all posted!
Cheers Cheesy
