I am now looking for James Burgess and Amelia.  I believe born in Cheshunt around 1782.

I have several Herts 41 indexes but I cannot seem to find this couple.  Do you have any other information that may help?

Have found in 1841 James Burgess (55) born in Cheshire - but with a wife (10 years younger - 2nd wife??) of Elizabeth - Great Budworth - nr Northwich

Any use?

There are actually many James' that would fit, including 2 in Herts (Much Hadham & Rushden) but none has a wife named Amelia.

The only other information i have is that they had a son Willima b.1809 (although he married in 1827 Cheshunt)

Hello Hollie,

You don't say why you need the census record but there are a couple of possibilities why this couple can't be found. Amelia seems to have been baptised in Chesunt to Thomas and Sarah Rogers 4.4.1783. This would make her at least 58 by the time of the census James would have been of a similar age or maybe much older. Therefore both could be dead; one could have died and the other remarried; they may have slipped through the census net or even emigrated etc.

If it's of any help the marriage for this couple will most probably be in the Allen Index of Hertfordshire marriages. You can access this index free by using the HALs website. Sorry I don't know the address but I'm sure other Rootschatters do. If you are fortunate this will give the residences (town/village) of both bride and groom. Unfortunately it will not be much of a help with any children.

Hello Hollie,

Me again.

Had a quick looksee in IGI. An Amelia Burgess married a William Battle in Cheshunt 6.6.1812. Once again Allen Index might help to show whether Amelia Burgess was a widow. Also this couple may appear on the 1841 census. IGI shows 3 children Eliza 2.5.1813; James 12.10.1814; Thomas 20.10.1817.

The Allen Index, now known as The Hertfordshire Marriage Index is now online.  A quick search reveals only 1 marriage for an Amelia BURGESS.  The one quoted by Benzol to William BATTLE.  The online index does not give marital status, but the PR entry could be ordered online from HALS.  This would also give the names of the 2 marriage witnessess.
