Hi, I am looking for info on the Christs Hospital School in the 1840's, is it possible to get details of a Matilda Brasted, who was shown on the 1841 census as one of the pupil's, Rowley

Would this have been a "blue coat" school, a kind of charity school? If so, there is quite a bit on these schools if you google, but I don't know about his particular one. The one in London has records back to the beginning of time practically. I would try the local archives in Herts. Perhaps someone else knows more.

Hi Loo, Sorry I should have made that point, it is a Blue Coat School and it is the one which moved to Hertford,Matilda was my Grt Grandmother and finished up as a Headmistress in a school in Wales, she became a Williams a much harder name to trace as we all know, I will give Google a try, thanks Rowley

Hi Rowley
Well its still there, almost in all its glory (except for the chapel which was demolished to make way for a Tesco!) although of course its offices now, but the bluecoat statues are still there, and the one in Ware. If you want a picture I could take one sometime for you. I might be able to dig something out on the history as well, cant promise to do it quickly though as although I live here, I work somewhere else so am only back in the evenings. However the current dormitories date from 1904 only, if you look on the discover Hertford site at the old photos http://www.hertford.net/history/photos.asp# there is a picture of those that they replaced and also of the frontage onto Ware Road.
Regards
Anthony

Hi Rowley
Well it just so happens I was out in Hertford today, as it was a day when you can ride on vintage buses all day for free (they recreate the route network of the 50s/60s) and took a couple of pics just in case, including an almost comparison of the old Ware Road shot on the discover Hertford site.
If you PM me an email address I will resize them and send them on (they are a bit big at the moment, about 2mb each)
Regards
Anthony

Hi Rowley (and wamwig!)
I also have a few pics of the Blue Coat School in Ware. 3 of my lady rellies were teachers there from about 1840 - 1880.
Yell if you would like any copies but I'm sure that Anthony's pics will be fabulous anyway
Di
