Hi
I have found a family member on the NAAIRS site and wonder if someone could tell me what the record means.
Database: Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository DEPOT NAB SOURCE MSCE TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 0 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 9678/1924 PART 1 DESCRIPTION LEWIS, CHARLES PRICE. (S/S MARCIA STANLEY, BORN GABB). STARTING 1924 ENDING 1932 REMARKS MSCE 17 873. Is it a will? Which one of the two dates might be his death date, do you think? Could a copy be ordered from the Pietermaritzburg archives? Any idea of an average cost?
Charles Price Lewis was born 1838 in Abergavenny, Wales. In 1861 he is a farmer in Herefordshire. Charles married Marcia Stanley Gabb in Wandsworth in 1863. He is mentioned in an Abergavenny solicitor's records in 1878 as "Charles Price Lewis of Umlass, Province of Natal, and Marcia, his wife." That's all I know about him.
Any help, clues, hints, suggestions would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks Koromo

Hi Koromo
It is his Estate file. It will have a Death Notice which, if completd correctly, will have his parents names, his occupation, where he was born, where he was married, his wife's names, where he died, his children's names, the approx value of his estate and whether he left a will or any property. The file may also contain a Will and/or the Liquidation and Distribution accounts.
The start date is usually indicative of the year he died. The reference in the Remarks is his wife's Estate file number. It appears she died in 1932.
To get copies of the documents from the Archive, look at the first topic on this board.
Sorry if post sounds short, but I am running out and couldn't resist not replying!! This hobby is way too addictive...
Regards Moira

Hi Moira
Thank you for the explanation. I was so excited at finding Charles that I didn't even think to look up Marica, and of course she's there too.
I take it that it is better to order any copies from the Gen Soc SA, rather than the Nat Archives. I will pass all the information on to a Canadian 'cousin' who is more closely related to Charles and Marcia than I am.
I've Googled for Umlass/Umlaasweg but can't find anything historical about it. Would it have been a dispersed farming community back in the 1870s?
Thanks again for your help. Yes, the addiction just will not go away!
Regards Koromo

Hello Ruth
Thank you for that. What a coincidence that the marathon is being run through there today, or is it next Sunday!
I also stumbled across this map, and got all excited to see that it mentions "Lewis farm" but there is no other information available at all so don't know if it has anything to do with my lot or not.

Apparently the last letter received from this family in 1949 was from "The Hill" which ties in nicely with your description of the area! Four of Charles' children were living there, all in their 70s and presumably unmarried: Emmeline, Marion, Willoughby and Tom. I think I've found their estate files on NAAIRS too. Three older children were named Nellie, Chris and Ernest.
Anything else you do find out about the family would be very gratefully received.
Regards Koromo

Oh, Ruth! It didn't occur to me that you'd try phoning!
Thank you very much, it's so good of you.
(Hope your dog wasn't injured)
