HUNTing down the past (haha - GENIUS)

The Tudors
« on: Friday 08 June 07 19:35 UTC (UK) »

I have just finished rereading The Other Boleyn Girl, and have decided that it would be just about the best thing in the world if I were to somehow discover that I was related to the Boleyns (unlikely, I know). Have any of you made any such "discoveries"?

Katie

I read it last year amongst a pile of books about various princesses and other famous women.  A very good read as you say!

The funniest thing was when one of the Pulestons (who the Glyndwrs married into) was the Constable of Cearnarfon Castle in the 1200s. The Welsh would not pay the taxes for yet another war, so he was hung by them. So I have my Welsh peasantry ancestors and my 'posh' ones. This explains my inner turmoil - my genes are fighting each other  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I'm mostly ag lab and coal miner though with the odd landowner thrown in. Like all of us  Smiley

An English teacher I had at school was related to Anne Boleyn.

Just about all my ancestors were just common people (financially).  I really can't see my family being linked to any royalty but I can always hope...

I agree, "The Other Boleyn Girl" is a very good read!

Not descended from the Boleyns, but have a connection to them.  My direct ancestor Sir Henry Norreys was among those executed by Henry VIII for alleged adultery with Anne Boleyn.  He went to his death denying it.  Elizabeth I was grateful that Sir Henry had defended the honour of her mother, and reinstated the family in royal favour, creating Sir Henry's son the first Baron Norreys of Rycote.  His grand-daughter Elizabeth Norreys was a god-daughter of Elizabeth I (probably named after her!) and married Major-General Sir John Jephson, setting up an Irish line of descent for me.

My family seem to have treasured the Jephson connection.  My dad's Christian name was Jephson, and the name has continued through my brother and one of his sons.

Hi Marie,
I always felt very sad for those men who were executed, especially Mark Smeaton who was only a musician and very young. And of course Annes brother Rochford was executed as well so good old Sir Henry for denying it all because I expect he was tortured like the others were.

Yes, you're absolutely right, Linda!  I'm sure Sir Henry would have been very pleased to see his descendants restored to fame and fortune by Anne Boleyn's daughter!

What horrendous parents a lot of these 'noble' people were! Mary Boleyn's thought it was quite Ok for both of their daughters to be the King's mistresses.  Jane Grey's married her off and then schemed for her to be made queen. They used to beat her on the slightest pretext, and she wrote sadly about the fact that she could never please them, and the "pinches, nips and bobs" that were all she ever got. It was a miserable life to be the child of one of these 'top families'; they seem to have been regarded as mere pawns to be used to their parents' advantage.
