Hi, Can anyone find my elusive James Roberts on the 1861 census for Stockport. He would be aged 14 to 18 years . If his father is still alive, his name was John. I have only ever found James on census after he was married in 1881 and 1891 when he was living in Bollington but states he was born in Stockport. He married in Stockport (Edgeley) in 1876. Thanks Norfolkgal

Hi Welcome to rootschat I have just checked the 1851 census for the Stockport reg districts and there is no James of around the correct age nor is there a James of any age living with a father John, the 1861 census is not name indexed so very difficult to search without an address. There doesn't seem to be a birth indexed for him either in Stockport ? sorry

Thanks for the quick replies. My James is very elusive. You see he states on the 1881 and 1891 census that he was born in Stockport. Depending on which census or which certificate you believe (I have his marriage and death certificate), he was born anywhere between 1843 and 1847. I was hoping to find him living at home on the 1861 census with his father, John (named on the marriage cert. but deceased at the time of James marriage). The James Roberts in Oldham on the 1871 census has been found on the 1881 census as a different James Roberts to mine - Boo Hoo!. Strange too - I have trawled through all the James Roberts births on the 1837online site for the years 1843-1847 and can't find one born in Stockport! James Roberts was my Great Grandad and I would love to find out more about him. Thanks for your help, Norfolkgal.

Hi I wonder if you could post details of the whitenesses on the marriage certificate, plus age on marriage and death certificates. In the past I have had some success finding people through "friends". Also on the marriage index for 1876 there is a JR marrying Margaret Majors would this be them ?

Thanks for the help. Yes, My James Roberts married Margaret Major. Here are the details from the marriage certificate - 5th June 1876 James Roberts aged 29 years bachelor tobacco maker residence Adlington Square, Stockport father John Roberts deceased labourer. Witnesses were John Henry Mansfield and Elizabeth Major (brides sister). James Roberts death certificate - 17th April 1895 Bollington aged 48 years, Margaret Roberts (wife) present at death. 1881 census says he was born Stockport and aged 38years. He is living in Bollington 1891 census says born Stockport age 48years. He is still living in Bollington. I wish I could find him pre-marriage. The mind boggles! Norfolkgal

Yes I have found Margaret's family. She was born in Haslington. I can only assume that Haslington was mistaken for Adlington on the census - maybe her accent! I know my dad (who was from Stockport) used to put an H infront of words starting with a vowel - and then miss the H off words that really did start with H! Norfolkgal
