|
I trying to reseach a house and the families who may have lived in it over the years. the house is called Efford cottage in Everton Lymington Hampshire
so far i have found out that at the moment it a guest house i did ring up the the family who owned the place now and she was very helpfull and gave some little bits of infomaton
this is the information i have found so far
1700 During the purge on Roman Catholicism Father Paul Atkinson was held prisoner at Hurst castle, he died after 30 years of imprisonment 15 Oct 1729. It is said his ghost haunts the old tower. Father Paul Atkinson use to say mass at Efford Cottage. He is described as dark tonsured man.
1725 when the Lacy family came to live at Efford cottage. Mr Lacy died in 1749. 1891 henry Stuart Murray and family lived here 1901 census Major Henry Stuart Murray of the 4th West Yorkshire Regt age 30 Mary Florence Sophia Murray wife Ruby Murray age 9 Marjorie Bromley age 19 Groveness Susan Ann Reed age 44 Dom Cook Eva Moore 19 Parlour maid Dom Ellen Green 19 School Room maid Dom
1919/1926 My grandfather Sidney Henry Markes married my grandmother Edith Markes nee Rigby. Around this time they moved to Efford cottage where my grandfather worked as head gardner. Both my father and his sister where born here. which is why my interest in the cottage
it is called a cottage but in fact it is a large house I belive my grandfather who was a gardener could have really lived in one of the cottages on the land
I am now trying to find out who lived there in 1881/71/61/51/41
and onward if i can any help please is there a way you can research just an address on ancestry ?

Don't know if you can search census records with just an address but if it was a large, well-known house in the area how about looking through local directories to see if the occupants are listed.

Seen Ricky's answer but I've already typed this!
This appears to be the 1881 entry:
Efford Cottage Milford, Hampshire, England RG11/1191/27 p7 Jemima Sutton Serv (head) U 19 b Littlebourne, Kent Housemaid Domestic Serv John I. Sutton Servant 21 b Littlebourne, Kent Coachman Domestic Serv
At Everton Lodge which appears to be next door, or at least it was on the enumerators walk! - is a retired Colonel Trevor Goff with a load of servants. I wonder of Jemima and presumably her brother belong to his household but lived in separate accommodation?

Thank you little Nell and Ricki
how did you find it on the 1881and other census with out a surname?
Efford house could be the cottage as I have seen photos of off Efford cottage and it does look more like a house than what we normal would think of as a cottage
http://www.explorethenewforest.co.uk/effordcottage.htm this is a link to the efford cottage which is now a guest house
hope showing this link will be ok as it is advertising, if not I apologise It the only photo I have been able to find

Thank you to everyone's for your help and because if that help I have managed to find that Warren Peacock lived in Efford house 1901 and as the Murray family lived in Efford Cottage at this time I think I can safely say they are two different buildings

Hi Cherryberry
It s a case of finding it on one census , finding the district, then see if its in the same district on other census, if not, its search page by page till you come to it. I don't know if Little Nell knows another way. A long procedure, sometimes it works sometimes it don't
regards
