Afternoon,
I was wondering if anybody might be able to help in transcribing a small element of a birth certificate that I recently ordered.
I'm trying to determine the maiden name of my great, great, great grandmother Elizabeth Cuddy (1803ish - 1873). It appears to be a four letter surname, ending, it would appear, with an 'f', preceded by an 'o', however, the quality is not very good.
How do I stand in terms of copyright if I was to scan and post an image of the certificate on-line?
Obviously, I could order a second birth cert of another of her children, but I might end up with the same problem!
She was born in the Whitchurch area of Shropshire, if that's of any help!
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul
If you scan just a portion of the cert (the bit you're having trouble with, plus a bit more for handwriting comparison) you will not be in breach of copyright.
Cheers Prue

Right,
I've scanned the certificate, with the part in question, plus the next three columns, as the text best for comparison is within the third or fourth. Is this okay?

I think it looks like Cof (doesn't sound like a proper name though) and the"f" looks a bit different to the "f" in formerly and the "f" in of.

Hello Pinetree,
How do you search the IGI Index? This sounds promising, however, there seems to be a discrepancy in the birth year by up to about 5 years. On various census returns, her birth year is stated as 1801, 1803, 1805, 1806 and one even as 1811 !!!
I think I read something about how they used to round up to the nearest 5 years?? Is this the case?
It's surprising how much clearer the text became after scanning it and altering the colour!!

Paul,
This is the site for IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/
If you click on the search tab and then choose IGI from the left hand column you can narrow down the search using the various boxes.
The only census where rounding was used officially was 1841 where adult ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years which could make people seem a bit younger on this census but ages are not always that reliable on any census.
Also baptisms did sometimes take place later than might be expected so the birth and baptism year do not always match.
Hope this helps.

Afternoon,
Cheers for all the help everyone! Much appreciated. Another quick question though(Okay, perhaps two)....!!!
The IG index: If I find a potential match within it, how do I go about viewing the original document? Is this actually possible, and will it show any more detail than is listed from a search online ie. Name of a Church where, say, a christening took place? Would I have to go down to my nearest Family History Centre?
Cheers!
Paul

Often there are church films which have not been transcribed to the commonly used search page. I have ordered a film using a 'town' keyword, which the Mormans have in stock and found German ancestors who are not on the name pages.
On the www.familysearch.org website you will see at the top is 'Library' then on the right hand side you can click on either keyword, name, etc. You can either search by parish or wade through county films. I'm sure you should be able to find something.
Take a note of any film numbers which interest you and you would like to rent and either find a local Church of Latter Day Saints or ask at your library to see if they provide the same service as the church.
Good luck, Rena
