Dudley marriage 1874
« on: Sunday 10 June 07 14:05 BST (UK) »

Hello all,
I have been at a standstill tracing my grt. grandfather Thomas Cox b. abt 1855 Rowley Regis, for what seems like forever. He was a widow when he married Mary Jane Partridge (just Jane on the certificate)at Rowley Regis in 1884, and there is just a line through his fathers name. I'm certain that he was the illegitimate son of Sarah Cox who later married James Daniels.
I've been trying to work out who his first wife could be and whittled it down until I'm almost certain that it was Amelia Hill. I've just tried it on the IGI (oh why didn't I do that before?Huh) and there was a marriage between Thomas Cox and Amelia Hill on 25th Dec.1874 at St. Thomas, Dudley.
If anyone is able to look this marriage up and see what information is available I would be very grateful.
Many thanks,
Doreen.

Hello gig,
Thank you, but  there are numerous Thomas Cox marriages which fit into both timescale and area that it's working out which is the one I'm looking for Undecided. Using the freebmd's and the census I have narrowed the options down and Amelia Hill is my favoured choice. I will send for the certificate if need be, but with a precise date and church given on the IGI if anyone visiting the archives is willing to do a look up I would be very grateful.
I also think that there was a son William b 1874/75 from this marriage. A grandson, William Cox, lived with Thomas's mother Sarah (until her death) and her husband James Daniels in all the later census. Again, which William? What puzzles me about this is the fact that the first son of Thomas and Mary Jane was registered at Halesowen in 1885 and named William Harry.
I know of children being named after a deceased child, but it's the first time I've come across this situation, and it's making me wonder if I'm going down the wrong path.
After 2 years on this branch of the family I'm almost ready to disown them. Cry
Regards,
Doreen

Thank you for looking up this marriage for me.
The Thomas Cox I'm looking for was born 1854 and illegitimate, so his age and the 'no father' certainly seems like the right one, and I can't find any other Thomas Cox who matches with that information.
A bit puzzled as on his marriage in 1884, he signed his name and gave his occupation as a labourer. As I haven't been able to find him in the 1881 census (widowed by then), I'm wondering if he left his occupation and went London area where his second wife (to be) was living.
Amelia Hill is who I thought.
I have no idea who the witnesses were so I'll do some fishing around as there might be some family link.
As Amelia Cox died in Dec. 1877 I think that is one certificate I will have to send for, although I'm almost certain that she was my Thomas's first wife now.
I'm very grateful for the look up, thanks again for taking the time.
Regards,
Doreen
