Help with German Ancestry - ELFENBEIN
« on: Monday 11 June 07 02:11 BST (UK) »

I am hoping that someone will be able to help me find information on one of my ancestors. His details are:-

Charles Frederick Henry Elfenbein or his German equivalent who was allegedly born on a ship in Hamburg Harbour 1825. His father was supposedly the Master of the ship he was born on. He came to Australia in 1855 on the "Europa" as a crewman.

In 1875 he obtained his Australian Naturalization which stated that he was a native of Wollin, Prussia.

Any help would be appreciated

The LDS catalogue shows they have microfilms of church records for Wollin, Sachsen, Preußen, 1794-1874.

Elfenbein means 'Ivory' in German. Smiley

Thanks for the info Jorose, I'll try the LDS for info. I and other family researchers have come to a dead end.  We have all the info on his arrival to Australia but now must try to find the Family in Germany.

Sorry, I can't find any Elfenbeins, but here's a bit about Pomerania (for background material):

Wollin, Prussia is actually Wollin, Pomerania and is now in Poland.

This is the present-day website for Wollin. In german, unfortunately, but the pictures look nice  Smiley

Everything else keeps coming up in german, maybe you will have more luck with an "english speaking" search machine.  Smiley

Thanks for the info Bob. The Wolin in Poland and the Wollin in Germany had me confused, but seeing that Charle's father was a mariner and so was he, the Polish Wolin seems the most likely place. Are there any sites to search for mariners from this area searching around 1800-1830. Perhaps home ports for shipping mainly the 'Europa', 1855+- 5 years.

Also wanting to know how I would go about finding his birth in Hamburg in 1825?
