Lismore - Between the mountains and the sea

COLES
« on: Sunday 25 April 04 00:12 BST (UK) »

I am looking for a Coles family.  My gggrandfather was John Coles who I think was born in Worstershire.  I do not know where for sure, but possibly Evesham.
John was in Commercial Street, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales in 1854.
When my ggrandmother Elizabeth Susannah COLES was born, and her father was listed as a Hairdresser.  Her mother was Elizabeth Jones.

Any info or connections appreciated.

...and here is John....

1851

Newport HO107/2452 Folio 553 Page 6

John Cole aged 20 and single from Worcestershire is a lodger in the household of a Thos Bonds in Newport. He is described as Hair Dresser. The address looks like an abbreviated form of Commercial Street.

1861

Not yet located. (Can anyone else please find this ?)

1871

Newport RG10/5344 Folio 15 Page 23

John Coles Head M 40 Hair Dresser Worcestershire Evesham
Mary Ann do Wife M 27 Mon Abergavenny
John do Son 9 Scholar Mon Newport
Frederick do Son 6 Scholar Mon Newport
Ada A do Daur 5 Scholar Mon Newport

69 Commercial Street, Newport.

In 1881 Ada A Coles is still living at 69 Commercial Street, but she is in the household of a Henry Tunstall, Hair Dresser and Confectioner. She is described as his niece. I cannot readily see the rest of the Coles family, at the moment.

Janette

I know that this is not much, but hopefully it will be helpful, if only to give someone else the impetus to find out some more for you. The 1861 census entry for John and Elizabeth looks as if it could be a key piece in the puzzle if anyone could find it.

Thanks for that census info.  I know that Elizabeth Coles nee Jones either died or divorced as John married a Mary Ann Williams (I think it is Williams).
She came from Abergavenny.  Hence the change in
in wives in 1871 census.

Have sent for 2 death certs. to prove it and both wrong.  I know you don't get much info from death certs. but wanted to tie up that end.as was my ggggrandmother.  Elizabeth's father was John Jones a watchmaker.

again many thanks

Also think that Henry Tunstal was married to Mary Ann's sister Sarah but not proved.
