Hi,
I am looking for information please about the parents and siblings of Thomas Rossiter born circa 1824 in Stockenhead, Devon.
I found him in the 1881 Census here:- http://www.rootschat.com/links/01my/ but his wife is not there and I need to find out there are more wives and children.
Any information would be greatly appreciated please. TIA.
Best wishes

Hi Karenlee,
Thanks for that. That definitely is the family. Strangely on FreeBMD I can't find a marriage for them.
I would have thought that they would have married at Devonport.
Perhaps the other censuses will turn up some further clues.
Best wishes

I did check the other Census for this man, and there was at least one that I thought might be him. The birthplace was given as Stockin or Stocking in Herts, not Devon, so I did not list them. Do you want them just to check? Happy to pass the information along to you.

Hi Karenlee,
Yes please. Even if it isn't him I can still put him in my database and follow up on him later.
Have to say that the Rossiters do move about a bit so they could be anywhere.
Best wishes

Hi Karenlee,
I have been attempting to reconstruct the family tree for this Rossiter.
I found a marriage for Thomas and Mary Ann Vogwill in 1847 which tallies with birth of Louisa. Mary died in 1856 and given that son Thomas was born 1870 I am assuming that father Thomas must have married Elizabeth ( or not?) between 1856 and 1870.
I found a birth for young Thomas ( Thomas Alfred Rossiter in March Qtr 1870) at Stoke Damerel and presume that Thomas married Elizabeth there.
I have checked FreeBMD but cannot find one. Can you find one please?
Best wishes

Hi
I have done a check of the BMD on Ancestry, not Free BMD, and there is nothing there that fits. Perhaps they never bothered to marry at all. Did you know that there were 2 possible Mary Ann in 1847 the other was surname LINSCOTT ??
I can check the 1841 for both Thomas and Mary Ann and see what turns up.

This is the closest match for 1841 for Thomas that I could find, not sure if it's right though :-
1841 Census England Devon Paignton HO107/228/10/14 Paignton
ROSSITER John 50 Miller Yes Ann 52 Yes Harriet 24 Yes John 20 Yes Sarah Ann 17 Yes William Henry 13 Yes Thomas Low 16 Male Servant Yes
Did wonder, as Thomas was listed last in this family and was a servant, if this was not his family but were related?
This might be Mary Ann but it's not that useful really :-
1841 Census England Devon Whitchurch HO107/241/6/7 Smith's Shop
BLANCHARD William 2 Shoemaker Yes Mary Ann VOGWELL 15 Mantua? Maker Yes
Gosh the writing on this is hard to read.
On the next page is a Jane VOGWELL 20 Not born in County and a with her a George aged 2 born in Devon, a Henry aged 6mths born Devon and a Margaret PELLOW aged 1 not born Devon.
Other VOGWELL in Whitchurch are :-
HO107/241/12/18 Whitchurch Boyton
In the house of John and Jane GILES
VOGWELL Eliza 11 Yes
HO107/241/6/6 Whitchurch Grenson? House
VOGWELL Henry 45 Gardener Yes Jane 50 Yes Sarah 11 Yes
VOGWELL Henry 20 Ag Lab Yes Henry PELLOW 15 Ag Lab Yes Susannah NEWBERRY 20 Female Servant Yes Fanny BROOK 20 Female Servant Yes
HO107/241/4/2 Whitchurch Horsabridge
VOGWELL John 80 Farmer Yes John 55 Ag Lab Yes Joanna SIMMONS 60 Yes
Think that's all of them
Hope you can make some sense of them and make them fit your tree somehow.
Let me know if I can find anymore for you
Cheers Karenlee

Hi Karenlee,
Checked my database and came up with Thomas Lowe Pillar Rossiter baptised 1824 in Stokeinteignhead, who looks a good possibility but I only have his family upto 1832 and Elizabeth is not there.
His parents were William Rossiter born circa 1787 and Elizabeth Pillar born circa 1802. Maybe you could find Elizabeth with them in the 1841 Census.
Also wondered if the HORSMILL boarders in your 1861 posting were actually VOGWELLs as the visual shape of the name is the same. It would certainly give them a good reason for boarding there as they were relatives.
What do you think?
Best wishes
