I am trying to find a baptismal record for a Martha Power, father's name Thomas Power ( a mason). The birth is recorded as Kington Herefordshire and is circa 1800. Any assistance much appreciated. Many thanks, delPiero

Where did you find the information about place of birth. I can find no Power baptisms in Kington.

... however I can see a Martha POWELL daughter of Thomas and MAry baptised in July 1797, and wonder if there is a mistranscitpion somewhere along the line.
Kington History Society c/o The Kington Centre, Bridge Street, Kington HR5 3DP may be able to tell you if this is correct .

Dear EBN, You are a gem!!! Thank you very very much!!!! The Power comes from the name of her father on a "second marriage" certificate. The whole of the certificate is written by one person, the surname for the father appears as Powe and then ends with a small mark, making Power seem the best bet. However if the person writing is relying on people saying their names to him, "Power" and "Powell" sound very similar. Martha consistently records her birth as Kington or Kingston in Herefordshire. From the 1851 census her birth date appears as 1801, from the 1861 census her birth is 1797. So, I think we have a match!!!!! On a personal note, how do you have access to these records? Are they available online? Also, you have given me a postal address of the local historical society. If I write to them is it possible I could obtain a copy of the baptismal entry/certificate or at least find the church? Again your help much appreciated. Kind regards, delPiero (I am a New Zealander teaching in Thailand but I like Italian soccer).

I used the IGI batch numbers for Herefordshire. A wonderful resource which saves much time rather than going through lots on the IGI itself.

If you look at this there are lots of Powells to be found and you can possibly find parents or other siblings.
I doubt the Kington History Society will have more that an accurate transcription, but the original register should be in the Archives at the Hereford Record Office. Go to the Council website at www.herefordshire.gov.uk and click on the Family History link on the front page.
