My great grandmother was born Sarah Reynolds in Canon Pyon in 1844. She married a James Harris and they had two children, James in 1868 and Sarah in 1869. In 1874 Sarah married, as a widow, my great grandfather George Pritchard of Weobley.

I am replying to my own request because somehow it was posted before I had a chance to ask my questions! Can anyone find a death recorded for a James Harris please? The ones I have found are in their 70's and 80's. I would have thought Sarah Harris' (nee Reynolds, born 1844 in Canon Pyon))' husband would have been a younger man, but you never know! Also I have a problem in deciding which George Pritchard is my ancestor as there were a few born around Weobley in the years 1847 to 1851. On George and Sarah's marriage certificate his father's name is William.

He died between the birth of the 2 year old and the Census in 1871, and there are a couple of possibilities in 1870, one in Kingsland and one in Bodenham areas. The Register Office at Leominster should be able to help you pin point which one of these he might be. The census mentions he was an Ag Lab, so that might find him. I cannot see a marriage, do you have the marriage certificate, or James on the 1861 census ?

IGI Has George Pritchard son of William and Martha baptised in Weobley in November 1850
On 1881 census he gives his age as 34 [i.e born 1847] but maybe he was older when baptised

I'm with Susan on the name. It looks as though it is John Harris, and the 1873 marriage in Ludlow sounds good. There is a near match in April 1870 for death of John Harris.
To confirm this get John's Death Certificate and the children's Birth Certificates from Leominster Register Office, The Old Priory, Church Street, Leominster Herefordshire HR6 8EQ

Thank you Rainbowuk and EBN for your replies. Can you tell me the extent of the Ludlow area please? I had noticed a Sarah Reynolds there, but couldn't find a James Harris. I would be happier accepting a John Harris if Sarah's son hadn't been named James. However, on the 1851 census Sarah has a brother James Reynolds (their parents being George and Catherine Reynolds), so you are probably right, especially as there is a death recorded for a John Harris in 1870. I will try to find a marriage using the name John Harris. As for George Pritchard, his age is given as 49 on the 1901 census (living in Ledgemoor with 20 year old daughter Frances, aka Minnie) so, again, I think you have found the right one, born Nov. 1850 to William and Martha Pritchard in Weobley. I will try to get relevant certificates. Many thanks, Marion

William Pritchard married Martha Tong in Weobley in February 1844 or William Pritchard married Martha Baker in Byford in February 1850
Do you have George's Birth Certificate to confirm the mother's maiden name ?

No birth certificate for George Pritchard yet because I was not sure of his d.o.b. His father was William Pritchard, an ag. lab. according to his marriage certificate (April 19th 1874 , Kings Pyon parish church) to Sarah Harris (Widow). Although a farm/estate worker at Ledgemoor he was a very good shoemaker. My mother said that her mother,Alice Rose Pritchard and sister Minnie used to "go over the fields" selling strips of leather as shoe/boot laces. I have a photo of my eldest cousin in 1924/5 wearing soft, baby shoes that George is supposed to have made for her. In fact on his eldest daughter's marriage certificate (my grandmother, born 1878) she describes him as a Master shoemaker! However I think she was maybe polishing his image a little! She married my grandfather Thomas Hill in Newport Mon. register office on Christmas Eve 1898, before she was 21 and gave her name as Rose Hannah Pritchard, when she was baptised Alice Rose Pritchard. So, I think she wasn't beyond telling a little white lie. Thanks.
