TURNERS - 1841 & 51
« on: Tuesday 12 June 07 22:35 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help me to find my family.  I have them all in 1861 and onwards but I just can't find any of them before the 61 Census.

Here they are in 1861:

1861  -   Abbingdon Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, England - RG9/2981/85/15

Elijah   TURNER   H   48   M   Millwright                  Cheshire, Cheadle
Anna   TURNER   W   48   M   Millwright wife                 Cheshire, Cheadle
Thomas   TURNER   S   18   U   Millwright (Apprentice)      Staffordshire, Anley(?)
Fredrick   TURNER   S   12      Scholar                                 Cheshire, Cheadle
John A   TURNER   S   8      Scholar                                 Lancashire, Ashton
Mary A   TURNER   D   6      Scholar                                 Lancashire, Ashton

and the eldest son James also in 1861:

1861 Census - Stamford Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, England - RG9/2981/49/8

James   TURNER   H   25   M   Millwright    Cheadle, Cheshire
Harriet   TURNER   W   25   M   -                    Dukinfield, Cheshire
Tom   TURNER   S   1   U   -                    AUL, Lancs

........ but I can't find a trace of any of them before this.  I'd be grateful for any advice on where they might be or how else I could trace them

Alli

Oh wow - this is good.  Thank you very much.

I'd got them all on the censuses from 1861 onwards but I hadn't got any birth or marriage info on them.  It looks as if the records from St Michael's might well have other info on the Turners.  How can I get hold of these records?  I s'pose it would have to be a trip to a Records Office? - which one? There might even be a record of some of their baptisms before 1861 and possibly even Elijah's marriage.

Hi,

I notice that Thomas was born in Staffordshire so this could be them.

1841 Census:
All the family were not born in County
Clough Street, Shelton, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire

Elijah Turner, 25, Millwright J,
Ann, 25,
James, 5
Harriet Elizth, 1

If they were in Ashton under Lyne on the 1851 they may well be on the part that was water damaged. Some of this has now been reclaimed so perhaps a specific look up for them may have more success.

Regards,
Mo

Oh yes , well done.  It's definately them. I'd never have found them.

How would I find out if they are on the reclaimed part of the Ashton 51 census?  Also any advice on how I could get the St Michael's records would be very gratefully received.

Hi Ninian,

I would personally start a new look up request on the Lancashire board and include either "unfilmed" or "water damaged" Ashton Under Lyne 1851 etc. in the title.

Good Luck,

Hi Mo

Thanks for that - will do.

P.S. I really would never have found him - Ancestry have mistranscribed him as Elizah even though it clearly says Elijah on the census return.  So I couldn't find him for ages even when you'd provided me with the info!!

Alli and Mo

Many thanks, both.

I've now fitted all your info into my database - it all fits really well.  All the dates fit really well with my census stuff so it's moved me on really well.

I hadn't noticed, Alli that you had found Elijah's marriage - I'm sure it's him, so thanks especially for that.
