Hello Jo3,
I am trying to locate the birth of my great grandfather in Whitehaven c1862, his name was John James Murray however I believe his Birth certificate will show him  simply as John. His father was also a John and I think they lived in New Houses in 1881. I am trying to narrow my options.

I am interested in finding also more info on my great grandmother Ellen Murray Nee Doran born c1864 daughter of Bernard Doran who was born in Whitehaven c1831.
Thanks for your offer of help.

Hi Fremund,

I think I have found John James' BAPTISM at Christ Church.

23 September 1860, John James MURRAY, son of John and Sarah, Newtown, Whitehaven. Occupation Labourer.
Also to the same parents - 16 November 1862 Joseph, and 13 October 1867, Sarah.  Unfortunately the birthdate was rarely recorded.

I looked at marriages in the four main C of E churches but no luck with John and Sarah or John James and Ellen.

In 1871 the MURRAYS were living at 29 New Town (Pipehouse Lane) RG 10 5253/22/37.

John/Head/Mar./46 yrs./Dock Labourer, Bn Whitehaven
Sarah/Wife/Mar./46 yrs./Bn Whitehaven
John/ Son/-/11 yrs./Scholar/Whitehaven
Joseph/Son/-/8 yrs/Scholar/Whitehaven
Sarah/Dau/-/4 yrs./-/Whitehaven

Not much luck with DORAN (they may have been RC).

1871 has Bernard DORAN at 93 Middle Row, New Houses (RG 10/5260/57/36) but I haven't found Ellen.  Bernard's age was 35 yrs., a coal miner born Ireland.
Wife Ann, aged 32 yrs., born Whitehaven as are children Thomas (Cool and Margaret (5).

Another family of DORAN's are at 19 Castle Row, New Houses (RG 10/5260/49/20) James (48) and Kate (43)and they have a daughter Elenor aged 7 yrs. (which is about right) I can give you details if needed but if you are certain the father was Bernard I'm afraid it is not the right family.

Regards

Joan

I just looked at 1851 census for New Houses - Murrays aren't there but this appears to be the Doran family.

Back Row, New Houses

Margaret DORAN/Head/widow/65/Coal Miner's Widow/IOM
John DORAN/Son/Unm/23/Coal Miner/Whitehaven
Bernard DORAN/Son/Unm/20/Coal Miner/Whitehaven

 Smiley Smiley Grin Hello Jo,
Thanks very much for the time and interest you have given to my query it is very much appreciated.
I am hopeful that the Bernard Doran you have located in the 1851 Census is the one I am looking for. Certainly the birth place, ages and occupation all tally with the info I have from 1881 (50) and 1901 (70). Still work to do but I am intrigued with the possibility of having an ancestor from the Isle of Man which is where I assume Margaret comes from. (must ensure excitement does not cloud judgement Undecided)
Likewise the Murrays' you have found in 1871 I am very confident they are mine. I now aware (marriage cert) John married Ellen Doran in 1881 at the "register office" in Whitehaven by certificate. The marriage certificate reads, "John James Murray described in the certificate as John Murray". At marriage he was aged 20 his residence "New Town" his father was John a labourer.
Ellen is shown as aged 18 a factory hand from New Town father Bernard a Coal miner. The witnesses were William Kennedy who I believe was married to Ellens sister Catherine and Ann Kitchin.
I know that by 1901 John and Ellen with their seven children were in Newsham northumberland. Their neighbours include the widowed Bernard (70) who was living with his daughter Catherine kennedy a widow aged 39 and her family of five. From the ages and birth places of the children the move must have happened between 1889 and 1892.
Thanks again Jo.

Hello
I have a direct ancestor an Eliza Doran born approx 1822, one census says Isle of Man and another says born Whitehaven. She married Thomas Convery in Whitehaven at the Catholic Church in 1844. She had 7 children and died in Whitehaven in 1866. In the 1851 census she is living with husband and children at 39, Castle Row, Newhouses. Just to confuse Convery is sometimes spelt like Connery. Is she an elder sister of your line? I have Thomas and Eliza's marriage certificate somewhere. I will check her father's name.

Doran/Keenan
« Reply #11 on: Sunday 05 June 05 20:44 BST (UK) »

Hello:
I have a Bernard Doran that married my Susannah Keenan in 1865, Maryport, Cumberland, ENG. Susannah was born in 1838 in Ireland.
They had a son, John Doran born in 1881. I have Susannah's family originally located in the Dearham area of Cumberland, ENG after IRL. I have found Susannah's brother , John Keenan, who was baptized in Kircubbin, Co. Down in 1835. Her parents were Felix and Sarah (McQuoid) Keenan; b. IRL in 1814/1809.

Interestingly enough, the sponsers for John's baptism were Lucinda Dorrian and Robert McShane. I am told that Dorrian is a county Down variation of Doran.
I can't put my hands on it, but I believe I saw a Doran listed in one of the Workington area census, living in the home of a Felix Keenan and listed as a nephew.
If anyone has any additional info on these families, drop me a line.
Best regards,
Chuck Keenan

I just found the census reference:
It is from the 1881 British Census
Thomas Keenan;35 Coal miner; IRL
Mary Keenan; 33, wife; Cumberland
John Doran; 5 months; nephew, Maryport, Cumberland
Sarah Keenan; 79; Annuitant, IRL

This fits in with previous info re: Bernard Doran marrying Susannah Keenan and the birth of John Doran in 1881.  The ages and names match my gr-gr gr grandmother, Sarah Jane (McQuoid) Keenan and her son, Thomas; b. 1845.
