death of Thomas Ker 1837/1838

Was there an epidemic in Dumfries in 1837 or 1838?. I think it possible that Thomas was buried in a mass grave in Dumfries as I cannot find arecord of his death apart from his will that tells me of his death. Would there have been an obituary in a local paper as he was a farmer of some standing in the Stoop , any info would be helpful.

Scottish death records don't start until 1855 - so I guess you were lucky to find the will  Smiley

It might be worth contacting the Ewart Library in Dumfries:

They do have copies of the old newspapers and he might well have been mentioned.

Just to let you know there was a cholera epidemic in Dumfries in 1832 - from 15th Sept. to 27th Nov.   A large burial mound lies in St. Michaels graveyard but no names of those buried there. Over 550 people buried there.    Another epidemic in 1848 but no mention of anything in 1837/38.

Thank you Tika, with this information you have given me I can now get back in touch with an archivist in Dumfries who originally told me that Thomas had died during an epidemic Ihad thought at the time that there had been confusion over the details I gave,regards Stoop
