My Gt Grandmother was Mary Jane Kegg who is on the census of 1851 as being in the Workhouse at Whitehaven. Her Birth Cert says her Mother is Mary Kegg formerly Hutchinson and she was born at Tear's Court, Peter Street, Whitehaven. There is not any mention of the father on this cert but on her baptism at St James, I believe, it says her father is John Kegg. Kegg can be spelt in several different ways Keg, Caig, Caeg etc and in 1851 Mary Jane is listed as Jane Kegg. I wondered if both of her parents had died by this time and this is why she is in the Workhouse. I have a Marriage Cert for 5/10/1843 at Whitehaven Registry Office for John Caig, of full age, Widower, Coal Miner, son of John Caig, Husbandsman marrying Mary Hutchinson of full age Spinster. Father, James Hutchinson, Mason. They both live at Giggs or Greggs Lane, Whitehaven. Witnesses James Hewitson and Catherine Blaney. I am trying to find out if this is Mary Jane's parents and, if so, what happened to them and who were they living with in 1841, to go further back. Any help would be great.

Can someone please look up to see if they can find a John Kegg and his Wife, Jane, and daughter Hannah in the Whitehaven area in the late 1830's. I think that this could be my John Kegg and his Wife, Jane, must have died and he then married Mary Hutchinson. Any information on any of these names would be very helpful. I particularly would like to know where they lived.
Thanks.
Carol.

Hi Andrea, Not sure how I am going to be able to prove that I have the right family. I found a Jane Kegg who died in 1839. The Marriage Cert I have for John and Mary in 1843 lists John Caig as a Widower, Coal Miner, of Greggs (Giggs) Lane, Whitehaven. Mary Hutchinson is living at the same address. Her father is James Hutchinson (Mason) and John's father as John CAIG (Husbandsman). I saw where Greggs Lane used to be on a recent visit to Whitehaven. I wondered if the witnesses on the Marriage Cert of James Hewitson and Catherine Blaney could have lived nearby and thus, given us a clue. I doubt very much if they would have left a Will if Mary Jane Kegg ended up in the Workhouse as a Pauper. Mary Jane Kegg was born at Tear's Court, Peter Street, Whitehaven. Any idea what Tear's Court, Peter Street was in 1848? Could this be another Workhouse?

Thanks for that information Andrea. I am afraid I live a long way from Whitehaven but I do have family there, who are very helpful. The Marriage Cert I have for John Caig and Mary Hutchinson shows that they were married at Whitehaven Registry Office so maybe the witnesses were friends.
