1841 Look up wanted
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 22:19 BST (UK) »

Please can someone do a look up for me in 1841 for Mary Hutchinson. I am not sure of her age but could be 20'ish. I believe her father was James Hutchinson and they came from the Whitehaven area. I would also like a John Kegg looking up in 1841. Again Whitehaven area and could be a little older than Mary. They were married by 1848 when my Gt Grandmother was born but I cannot trace them in 1841.

Can you give any more information here?   Do you have them on any census?   What was your gt grandmother called?    I had a quick look at 1851 and could not see them.
Does your gt grandmother's marriage certificate show her father's occupation?

My Gt Grandmother was Mary Jane Kegg who is on the census of 1851 as being in the Workhouse at Whitehaven. Her Birth Cert says her Mother is Mary Kegg formerly Hutchinson and she was born at Tear's Court, Peter Street, Whitehaven. There is not any mention of the father on this cert but on her baptism at St James, I believe, it says her father is John Kegg. Kegg can be spelt in several different ways Keg, Caig, Caeg etc and in 1851 Mary Jane is listed as Jane Kegg. I wondered if both of her parents had died by this time and this is why she is in the Workhouse. I have a Marriage Cert for 5/10/1843 at Whitehaven Registry Office for John Caig, of full age, Widower, Coal Miner, son of John Caig, Husbandsman marrying Mary Hutchinson of full age Spinster. Father, James Hutchinson, Mason. They both live at Giggs or Greggs Lane, Whitehaven. Witnesses James Hewitson and Catherine Blaney. I am trying to find out if this is Mary Jane's parents and, if so, what happened to them and who were they living with in 1841, to go further back. Any help would be great.

Ah, I had found Mary Jane.  I wonder if the workhouse records still exist?   They might give details.  Will look again tomorrow - past my bed time!

Not having much luck with this one.  There is a John Kegg age 14 in Harrington (male servant) in 1841 but that is rather young.  There is a death on FreeBMD for a Mary Kegg in Whitehaven in 1850.  There is also a death for a Catherine Blaney.  As John was a widwoer he may have had other children.  Possibly the John I found in 1841?
I wonder if you were to write to the Whitehaven register office and ask for help they would do a search for the parents for you?
Does Mary Jane give a name and occupation for her father on her marriage certificate?    I suppose she may have been too young to remember.   Poor little girl.
Another option is to get the film of the parish register of St James to search at your nearest LDS centre then you can look for burials for the parents.

Can someone please look up to see if they can find a John Kegg and his Wife, Jane, and daughter Hannah in the Whitehaven area in the late 1830's. I think that this could be my John Kegg and his Wife, Jane, must have died and he then married Mary Hutchinson. Any information on any of these names would be very helpful. I particularly would like to know where they lived.

Thanks.

You really need very local knowledge to discover people between census records.   Local directories might help if you know occupations.   Might they have left a will?

Hi Andrea, Not sure how I am going to be able to prove that I have the right family. I found a Jane Kegg who died in 1839. The Marriage Cert I have for John and Mary in 1843 lists John Caig as a Widower, Coal Miner, of Greggs (Giggs) Lane, Whitehaven. Mary Hutchinson is living at the same address. Her father is James Hutchinson (Mason) and John's father as John CAIG (Husbandsman). I saw where Greggs Lane used to be on a recent visit to Whitehaven. I wondered if the witnesses on the Marriage Cert of James Hewitson and Catherine Blaney could have lived nearby and thus, given us a clue. I doubt very much if they would have left a Will if Mary Jane Kegg ended up in the Workhouse as a Pauper. Mary Jane Kegg was born at Tear's Court, Peter Street, Whitehaven. Any idea what Tear's Court, Peter Street was in 1848? Could this be another Workhouse?

I  think it would help if you could search the parish records and find any other references to the name.   If you note every one, whether baptism, marriage or burial, you might build up a picture of the whole family.  You might also see whether the marriage witnesses were local - often the church wardens witnessed many marriages and you see their names frequently whereas a one off entry indicates friends or relatives of the couple.
The death certificate for Jane should say wife of John etc if it is the right one.
If you can't get to the local record office then you can order the film of the parish to search at your nearest LDS cntre (listed on familysearch.org) or if you are near London it may be at the Society of Geneaoligists.
I don't know Whitehaven at all but I suspect Tear's Court will be a building or alleyway off Peter Street.    You can google it and find old maps which might show it.

Thanks for that information Andrea. I am afraid I live a long way from Whitehaven but I do have family there, who are very helpful. The Marriage Cert I have for John Caig and Mary Hutchinson shows that they were married at Whitehaven Registry Office so maybe the witnesses were friends.
