missing ancestors
« on: Wednesday 13 June 07 23:32 BST (UK) »

would anyone know who are the ancestors of Elizabeth Carnall. I know that she was born  c 1802 and married William Barnes in 1823 in Huntingdon. I've looked on the IGI but can find no trace of her birth. Because they were married before 1837 and  I don't know how many parishes there were in Huntingdon I don't know where else to look.

Hi,
The Huntingdonshire page on the GENUKI website below states why you have not found your record on the IGI site, but all is not lost as you can see :-

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HUN/#Genealogy

<<The Bishop of Ely delegated authority to each parish as to whether they would permit their parish registers to be filmed by the LDS. Very few have agreed, although the situation is constantly under review and it is hoped that permission will be given for more registers to be filmed for inclusion. In the meantime, the Huntingdonshire Family History Society are transcribing the registers onto microfiche; available fiche are listed on the Publications List and is described on each parish page >>

To read the information of Huntingdonshire in its entirety I suggest you have a look yourself.

Regards,
Rena

If you repost on the Hunts board there are people on there with the transcript of Ramsey parish register, who perhaps don't read the Cambs board.

You need to approach the problem in the correct order - by working backwards from what you know, which in this case is the marriage. Where did it take place? They didn't marry in the town of Huntingdon for a start. The entry in Hunts Marriage Index for 1823 states Elizabeth Carnall married Wm Barnes of Benwick (which is in Cambs) at Ramsey. So Ramsey would be the place to start looking - first of all at what the entry says and who the witnesses were. Then hopefully you can find Elizabeth's baptism and the names of her parents.

There are three marriages in Ramsey between 1784 and 1804 any of which might be Elizabeth's parents.

Many parishes in Hunts have  been neither filmed nor  transcribed, so the only place to view the registers is at Huntingdon Records Office. You can see which parishes are available for sale on fiche on the Hunts FHS site at http://www.huntsfhs.org.uk/Publications/Fiche-8.html

The member submission on the IGI may be one of the many similar instances where the submitter deducts 21 for females from the marriage date and assumes that's the birth year and the birth was in the place of the marriage. The IGI also has William Barnes born about 1800 at Ramsey which if the submitter had bothered to look at the marriage entry would have realised that it was wrong. Moral - take all member submissions with a very large pinch of salt, especially those where the date is "about".
