Creating a homepage with gedcom access
« on: Tuesday 07 December 04 23:09 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I've just created a trial homepage I'd like to use as a starting point.  At the moment the php site is the homepage.  Can you tell me how I can set my homepage but to have some sort of button that can access my phpgedcom file?  I tried renaming my homepage html to index html but that didnt seem to work.

Thanks

Donna,

Do you in a way want two sites?

One for your phpGedview and another for a general page?

Ah is that how you have to do it, thought it was all just one bundle where you could link them together where tobitt-tree.rootschat.net would be my home page and you could put links on to say go to a photo page, view the gedcom file, history etc.  Thought I could just create a few html files and upload them and somehow tell them where to find another page.  I've just taught myself to write the code using notepad, is this no good?

Thanks again

Donna,

Yes, that's brilliant, that's even better. In a way it's "safer" for me to re-install phpGedView for you into another directory in your webspace.
Let's say we put it into a new directory called "tree", (don't just move it, because the configuration will be out).

You could then have a link from your homepage (which you could call index.htm or index.html) to http://tobitt-tree.rootschat.net/tree/ which would then show family tree in phpGedView.

The best way to do learn webpage design is something like Notepad, or any plain text editor. Smiley

Hi

So how do I get it to display my homepage first?  Still showing the phpgedview, I've named my page Index.html but nothing happens?  Do I need to put it in another file or something?

Try renaming "Index.html" to "index.html" that will do the trick. Smiley  (no capital "I")
