George Matthews on the 1851 Census (NOW COMPLETED - WITH THANKS)
« on: Thursday 14 June 07 14:17 BST (UK) »

Hello

I am still trying to find a George Matthews on the 1851 census, can anyone else help in trying to track him down please?

George Matthews born about 1836 in Chiswick

In 1841 he lived with his parents William and Caroline Matthews at Fishermans Place  Chiswick

In 1861 he lived with his wife Mary aged 22 born Chiswick
Son George aged 4 born Hammersmith
Son James aged 1 Hammersmith
RG9 Piece 25 Folio 8 Page 9
Anns Place St Paul  Hammersmith

In 1871 he lived with his wife Mary now aged 32
Son George now aged 14
Son Thomas aged 9 born Hammersmith
RG10 61
Somerset Place  Hammersmith

In 1851 Georges parents lived at Cromwell Buildings  Hammersmith
HO 107/1470

Any help, as always much appreciated.
Ewan

If it helps he has relatives with the surname of - Hobbs, Kinton, Lawton and could be in Chiswick, Fulham or Hammersmith.

Hi

His occupation on the 1861 census would suggest he may possibly have been at sea when the 1851 census was taken.  A lighterman was a boatman, although they tended to only work on loading and unloading larger ships

Hello Carol

Thank you for the reply, it has been suggested before that George may have been at sea, but I would of thought that he would of shown up on a census somewhere.  I have never come across an ancestor at sea before so I am not familiar with it.

Hi Ewan

As far as I know - members of the Royal Navy who were either at sea or aboard ship in dock were accounted for on the census.

People aboard a ship which was docked in a British port  were also included.

However - other categories of seamen who were actually "on the ocean" are not shown

Hello Carol

George could well have been on a ship somewhere, but I think he is just hiding with relatives some place.  The big question is where ............

I'll keep searching.

Thanks again

I have found a George Matthews living as a servant in Great Yarmouth, (HO 107 Piece 1806 Folio 146 Page 16) the birthplace is stated as London?  His age of 16 fits with being born about 1836 in Middlesex.  This could be him or could not, I think all avenues have been explored so I will count this as completed.

Many thanks to Carol for your help.
