Yes, I dont think you get any more info from the ''recognizances'' [as the bastardy orders are officially called] than it says in the card index.

I think the archives charge so much 'cos the orders seem to be little bits of papers stuck into an enormous book which has to be digitally photoed rather than just photocopied...

If you fathered an ilegitimate baby in those days - you had to provided surities or something & Wm Tompkins did not [or could not] so ended up in Bedford Gaol ...so, Carol, would you look up William Tompkins [aged 20] of Kempston on the online site ... just google Bedford Gaol and you will get it.

I think William was in gaol a few times for other stuff later in his life...but please have a look Wink  I use the Gaol site quite a bit as my kempston ancestors always seem to be rioting  Grin  Or, and, poaching  Grin

Anyway, I'll have a look for bastardy orders next week.

I have a bastardy order from BLARS for a Samuel Partridge. As David says there is not much additional info. On mine there is the amount Samuel had to pay £30, and to what parish the charge is paid to (where the female lived). There is also a second name plus his occupation, of  someone who would stand surety if Samuel fails to pay. Apart from that you get the full date, and the parish of the female participant.

William T had to do 3 months hard labour or pay £4 14s 4d and a half penny and then in 1853 he stole some barley etc and there is other stuff that seems to be him.  He was born in about 1799 in Houghton Conquest but appears to have lived mostly in Kempston...

No, I think Wm Tompkins birth would have been about 1801?

In 1851 census [I only have the index] it seems to have one of his children born in Northants.

And there is an old Wm Tompkins [aged 81] who was born in my home village of Wilstead - probably his Dad?

He was made to suffer for his bit of fun, wasn't he!

Or could it be that he refused to accept that he was the father? Given Frances's track record he may have had a point.

lol David

I dont know about that - but I don't think he learnt his lesson 'cos 2 years later he was in gaol for similar offence  Grin

At least I think it is him Huh

I was reading an old Genealogists' Magazine that says the estimates for the percentage of children not being ascribed the correct biological father is between 5 and 15% so we all probably are chasing the wrong paternal lines somewhere in our FHs  Shocked

I had assumed that the four entries 1821-3 related to the same coupling.  I imagine that he just didn't (or refused to) keep up his weekly maintenance payments.

On father's day (or at least it is here in France) perhap's Homer's quote is appropriate
“It is a wise child that knows his own father”

I had wondered that too, David.  Is the 1823 entry at Gaol referring to the same mother & baby?  I need to get the QS records to see as the Gaol records wont tell us.

You needed to get "surety" from friends [10 quid] which was a lot of money then... to say you would not do do a bunk and you would pay child maintenance.  I have no bastardy orders in my branches' so far, but looked up one for a lister and there are hundreds in Beds Archives  Sad    From a FH point of view it is worse if a woman never claimed from the parish 'cos then you never know who the father is  Wink

It his Father's Day too here in Bedfordshire!   My old Dad has already been presnted with his bottle of whiskey and cake - now he is off to Mass and my sister is cooking his Sunday lunch  Grin

Have a good Fathers' Day - the sun is shining here in Bedfordshire

That would be useful if you could look it up for me please. I have found some information out from that website and emailed Archives, who have given me a bit more information but they want £26 for a transcript.

Hi
If you want the bastardy recognisance why not ask for a copy rather than a transcript? It works out cheaper and it is nice to have the original writing - assuming you can read it of course! Cheesy The one I have - last year I think - was originally going to be £7 for a digital photo but in the end they were able to photocopy for £5 (their minimum fee).

The Lidlington PR has baptism of William Sturges Wildman on 27/02/1821, illegitimate son of Mary Wildman, lacemaker, of Lidlington.

Thanks for looking that up John. No mention of the father on those records then. It is proving hard to find out. I have found the details on the Turner line that I was following, thanks to the help of everyone on RootsChat. Hopefully we will be able to find Mr Sturges soon too.

Carol

There is no mention of a bastardy order for Mary WILDMAN and a man called STURGES c 1821  Roll Eyes

So I expect he may have made a private arrangement re: the baby?

cathy
Ps: Frances TURNER and Wm TOMPKINS order is listed as someone points out above.

Thank you very much for looking Cathy. It sounds as if a private arrangement must have been made for the baby. Are there any other records that could be checked to see if a Mr Sturges lived or worked in Lidlington or surrounding area? I have found one born in Barton of the right sort of age but do not know how to find out if this is the right person.
