1871 Census for Mary Ann Hicks
« on: Friday 15 June 07 11:49 BST (UK) »

Mary Ann Hicks was born in the St Martins area of Lincoln in 1822.

I have successfully traced her in the 1841 & 1851 census living with her family in Lincoln and in 1861 she is Housekeeper to a family in the St Peter in Eastgate area of the City, after this she seems to disappear.

There do not appear to be any recorded deaths in Lincolnshire for her in the period 1861-1871 that fit the profile however there is a Lincoln marriage of a Mary Ann Hicks to either George Dixon or George Crisp in the September quarter of 1862.

Despite an exhaustive search of the 1871 census I have been unable to find a Mary Hicks, Mary Dixon or a Mary Crisp that tie in with my Mary

Any help from knowledgeable Lincolnshire hunters would be appreciated.     Smiley

I will go away, engage brain, then return to continue the search  Roll Eyes

Many thanks Geoff for unknowingly giving me a deserved boot up the rear, I had downloaded that spreed sheet for the Lincoln Marriages about a month ago and I didn't give a thought to check it today.

Yes thats my Mary Ann (dau of Charles)

At least I can limit the search to the name Crisp.

Once again many thanks Geoff

Looking at 1861 -

George CRISP 26 Wansford Northants was in Lincoln

in 1871, he (33) and wife Mary (36!) were in Minting, Lincs with 8yo daughter Christina.

For some reason, Chistiana's baptism on the IGI names her father as Christopher Croft CRISP Huh ... the Croft seems helpful anyway.

Many thanks for the additional info Geoff.

The sighting in Minting in 1871 certainly seem the best bet so far even though Mary seems to have taken liberties with her age, 36 instead of 49?  Lips Sealed

The Burial in 1904 is spot on for the age and location, Lincoln cemetery records show she was living in Spital St at the time of her death, many of the family lived in the same street in the 1890's 1900's.

Thanks again for the info, much appreciated.

Lincoln cemetery records show she was living in Spital St at the time of her death, many of the family lived in the same street in the 1890's 1900's.

It looks like Christina CRISP married Wm GREEN in 1895 and was living at 44 Spital St in 1901 ... indeed
Mary CRISP (relative, widow) 78 was living with her.

From my BIVRI disk ...
Marriage 3 July 1895 St Nicholas, Lincoln
William GREEN (29, son of Thomas) to Christina CRISP (32, dau of George Aaron)

This all seems to tie together quite well I think.

Well Geoff that certainly dots the i's and crosses the T's on this one.  Grin

I know the memory is staring to fade but I have a vague recollection of my mother mentioning a Crisp family in my childhood many many years ago. Mary was in fact an Aunt of my mother who was also born in Lincoln.

Once again thanks for all the valuable details.

regards

Hello Geoff

Just to let you know we can put this one to bed now. I've traced Mary in 1881, the last census outstanding. The whole family were working as Servants at the Monson Arms Hotel, 251 High Street Lincoln.

Without your help I think it would have taken me a few weeks to resolve.

Cheers.

You did well to find them in '81.

My local pub used to be the Monson Arms - the new pub which opened in 1961 - it took over the licence of the old hotel.

The 1881 census enumerator had them down as Chrisp and not Crisp and Mary was still making out she was 10 years younger so it wasn't that easy tracing the family.

Its ironic that Marys father Charles was Under Butler 30 years earlier at the Queen Hotel. I found the building on a recent visit to the City and its now the HMV shop but the Hotel name is still on the front top facade.

The last time I was in the Queens there was a boxing match on the radio - Henry Cooper vs Karl Mildenberger - the internet tells me this was on 18 Sept 1968.
