Fairgrounds in the 20th century
« on: Friday 15 June 07 12:07 BST (UK) »

Hi
I have had 2 birth  certificates come back now and on both the children were born at a fairground.

November 1918 Attercliffe fairground nr Sheffield
Jan 1920 Huddersfield fairground
Does anyone know dates for fairs in Yorkshire and surrounding areas in the 20's -30's because it would be interesting to know where they travelled to.
I know the occupation of my family and that they are travelers.
The father was a licensed hawker but i thought maybe the mother told fortunes at these fairs.
fathers name was ELIAS Winter, mother was Mezelie Moss (Nellie)
He had a new Bow Top wagon built in 1923 , the last tis wagon builder ever built, but this was unusual as travelers were moving on to more modern alternatives, but maybe it was because his wife told fortunes in it ... who knows.
maybe some one out there can help.
thanks

Have you seen this: National Fairground Archive, University of Sheffield
ww.nfa.dept.shef.ac.uk/index.php
If you don't see anything on the site to help try contacting them for information.

Happy Christmas redred,

Have a look at fun-fairs.co.uk "All The Fun of the Fair Message" board. Some of the posters on that site may be able to assist with your query. If some fairground people are like a few of the circus people I met you're likely to find one who keeps a note of all the grounds they played over the past number of years.

Christopher.
