Licensed Rooms?
« on: Sunday 05 July 09 13:35 UTC (UK) »

Sorry if I am in the wrong area for a query but could someone tell me where, if possible, is the Licensed Room in the Parish of Aberystruth.  My gt gt's JAMES SMITH and MARY ANN HARDING married there on 15th March 1854.  Would it be a public building of some sort?  I would very much like to visit the place at some point soon, if in fact it is still there?  The family at that time were resident in Abertillery according to the marriage certificate and my gt grandfather was also born there in 1854.  Also, would my gt grandfather be registered in the Abergavenny office?  Unfortunately his name is JOHN SMITH!!
Thanks for your time.

not so many John Smiths in Wales. Registration district for Aberystruth was Abergavenny until 1/7/1861 when it transferred to Bedwellty

Only 1 likely registration

Thank you for that Osprey.  I know about the JOHN SMITH registered in Abergavenny for that date cos I inadvertently sent for the birth certificate, which was wrong.....forgot and sent for the same one again just six months later?.......(It's an age thing!)

Anyone out there looking for the birth of a JOHN SMITH with a mother ELIZABETH SMITH nee INGRAM and JOHN SMITH, father, of Tredegar Rd Rumney on 13th April 1854?  I have not one but two certificates you can have for free.  You could always give one of them to your brother or sister....

What I was querying was where the Licensed Room would be in the Parish of Aberystruth.  Would a licensed room mean a pub perhaps or a Town Hall or something of that sort?

Did take a run up there this afternoon but the roads are so narrow and the streets are lined with cars you couldn't really see an awful lot there.  We drove along Cemetary Rd but didn't find a cemetary either!  But this is what makes genealogy so much fun.

I tried googling for the licenced rooms, but all I found was your post on Curious Fox.
What about an email to the record office?
http://www.torfaen.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/GwentRecordsOffice/Home.aspx

Have you put the cert info on the unwanted certs board?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,153.0.html

It's always possible that John's birth wasn't registered, not compulsory for parents to register until mid 1870s.

Anything here of use?

Well, I didn't know it wasn't compulsory, registering until after that date, that explains a lot of missing of mine then.  I guess that applies to marriages and deaths also?

Didn't know about the certificates bit either.  Will post of there, have a few more to go on but they are 1958 and 1963 ones.  Am I allowed to put those on?

Will sent the e-mail to that address tonight.  Thank you so much for your help Osprey.  I have been picking this branch up and putting it back every couple of months. Would love to crack this family, there is a fascinating bit of family folk lore attached.  My mother has told me to leave it alone..........but that has made me all the more interested!!

The licensed room would have been a room in a public building where marriages could take place.  They were found in small towns that did not have their own registry office nor one in the immediate vicinity.  They enabled people who did not want to or could not get married in a church (e.g. divorcees) to get married in the town.  The registrar would travel to the llicensed room to perform the ceremony.  The same room would also be used for other civil purposes.

Originally they were an upstairs room in an Inn although later on they were more frequently found over large shops.  Burtons and the Co-op were often used because both were constructed so that the upstairs rooms could be used for various functions.  However the former fell out of favour when the rooms became billiard halls and dance halls.

Thanks David.  I did wonder about the public rooms or Inns but it is interesting to see they used shops occasionally too.  My Ancestor had not long been a widower when he married in 1854, with a young child but still had banns called.  Perhaps he was not of any particular religious persuasion and chose to marry in the Licensed Room.

No, marriages and deaths had to be registered. It only applies to births.

Parents may have been of different religious persuasion, hence register office marriage. Or non-conformist.
