Hi all  Smiley

Could it be rod paling?

My first thought too ... Googling is not too helpful, but there's one extract which leads nowhere ...  or Pole Teaning, and Hedging, the Rod Paling, by the Rod, with one Rayl Rayling, by the Rod Making of Faggots, Bavens, Billotts and Talwood ... but just about makes it possible.

Hi Heather,
I see looking at your posts that you were looking for info of your Gt Grandads family.I have in my possesion a book called""Street behind the chimneys"which is all about the people who lived in Inner Street during the two world wars and the Smith family is mentioned. Most of them worked at Ruston & Hornsby near by.(The book is out of print)but this is the info I have found.
Living at 64 Inner Street in the following years were.

1922.
John William (Senior)

1929.
John William (Senior)
John William (Junior) He was a moulder.
Charles Sidney

1935.
John William (Senior)
John William (Junior)

1939+ 1945.
John William (Senior)
There was no mention of William Snr.wife but apparently women had to be 30yrs old to be on the electoral in 1922 and 21 yrs old after 1929.

In 1929.
Robert Henry Smith +Ada Annie Smith lived 46 Inner Street.Robert was a Boiler smith + Welder.
A postscript at the back of the book mentions.
Private Ernest Smith, the eldest son of John(Jack) Smith of 64 Inner St.had gone to live with the Wainwright family because the Smiths house was so small(2 Bedroom). He was a relative of Private S Smith.John Smith worked for builders Rudds of Wharf Rd who at that time specialised in church buildings. For a number of years Jack worked on Durham cathedral.
Incidentally both my Father and my Mother-in-Law originated from Inner Street.
Hope this info is of some use

Regards
Kathy

Not related to your Smith family, but you may find my web site intresting as it has lots of smiths but all from down south I am afraid, just put smith family portland into your search engine.
