Hi

If you send for his birth certificate from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
this will give parents names.

Free BMD, http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl  has

Arthur John Harper  December qtr. 1853  Cirencester  vol. 6a  page 276

Have you found him in the 1861 census?

Regards

Hi

This looks like them in 1861 census

RG9/1771 folio 46 page 14

Hamwell Lane, Stonehouse

Abraham Harper  Head  Mar.  34  Carpenter   Gloucestershire Stroud
Maria Harper  Wife  Mar.  34    -    Wilts. Kemble
Eliza Harper  Daur.  -  11    -    Wilts. Kemble
Arthur J. Harper  Son  -  8   -   Wilts. Kemble
Edward W. Harper  Son  -  6   -   Wilts. Kemble
John Harper  Son  -  2   -   Wilts. Kemble

Sending for the birth certificate of Arthur will confirm this is the correct family.

Thanks for that! But when I searched ancestry, all I found that could have been a match was Handsworth, Staffordshire. Where did you find that one?

Hi

On Ancestry, one above the Handsworth entry.  Perhaps you were looking for Ewen as the birthplace?

Yes I was actually!

Wouldnt the place of birth remain the same on all the census returns?

Not necessarily, all depends on who wrote down what at the time!  Perhaps the enumerator "dittoed" mother's place of birth.

Kemble is not too far distant from Ewen, which in turn is about 3 miles from Cirencester the registration district for the area.

Birth certificate would also confirm place.
