Safari 3 on Windows
« on: Friday 15 June 07 18:50 BST (UK) »

It may be of interest that Apple have issued a version of their previously Mac-only browser Safari 3 that now works on the Windows XP or Vista operating systems.

The download is free and available at http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

This version is stated to be the Public Beta, but seems to be the finished product. The website boasts that 'Safari is the fastest web browser on any platform.'

You may want to try it and see for yourself, then let us all know what you think by using the poll.

I just tried it for a few minutes.

My Personal Bias

I worked with Macs for many years but I've spent the last 10ish years on Windows.
I like Firefox.

Likes

MUCH nicer experience.
Easier to read (from a comfortable distance)
I LOVE the font rendering. Bold actually looks bold!
Its speed is comparable with Firefox.

Dislikes

No AdBlocker
JavaScript disabling is global, not on a per-site basis.
A few small bugs (F5 leaves you in a different place).
I'll miss my Firefox plugins

Conclusion

I wont use it as my main browser but I plan to play with it and hope some of what I dislike disappears when the final release turns up.

I am a long-time Mac user, and I won't be touching Safari 3 until a lot of the very naughty vulnerabilities are fixed. Our Steve Jobs is trying to be all things to all platforms and seems to have rushed out this dreadful beta version.

I don't even use the earlier Mac Safari versions except for the Historial Directories site which is better in Safari. Otherwise, I'm very happy with Firefox.   Wink

Cheers
