Searching for ANY further information relating to Margaret McCreadie (b. 13 Nov 1859, Ballantrae), sister of my great grandfather. Their mother was Mary McCREADIE whom, I believe, was christened 25 Feb 1840, Ballantrae. The latest information I have regarding Margaret is from the 1881 Census when she and my great grandfather were residing with their grandmother Margaret at Shellknowe, Ballantrae: Margaret McCREADIE, Widow, Age 67 Born Girvan (b. c 1814) Head Domestic Servant Maggie McCREADIE, Unmarried, Age 22, Born Ballantrae Grand Daughter, General Servant William McCREADIE, Unmarried, Age 15, Born Ballantrae Grand Son, Farm Servant
ANY additional information which would assist me in tracking the lady would be gratefully received.
Kindest regards and thanks.

Hello Q98,
Was the grandfathers name James McCreadie, if so here is the 1861, census index for the family living in Ballantrae, Ayr.
James McCreadie, age 48 years, born Ballantrae, Margaret McCreadie, age 44 years, born Girvan, Jane McCreadie, age 9 years, born Ballantrae, James McCreadie, age 7 years, born Ballantrae, Margaret McCreadie, 1 year, born Ballantrae.
The index does not give relationships, so i dont know if these children are sons, daughters, or grandchilren, to the couple.
Jonn.

Hello Q98,
I just had a wee peak at the 1861. census that i gave you above, Margaret McCreadie, is the grandaughter of James McCreadie, and his wife Margaret, and Margaret, is down as Doak, i take it this is her maiden name.
The other two children were son and daughter, of the couple.
They lived in Main Street, Ballantrae, and James, was a Fisherman.
Hope this is of assistance to you.
Jonn.

Hi Jonn Thanks for that. For some reason, and don't ask me why, I had James and Margaret as only having one child; daugher Mary. Mary was the mother of Margaret Jnr (shown as 1 yr old on 1861 Census) and my great-grandfather William (b. 07 Aug 1866) and then married a Welsh miner named JONES (difficult to believe that hm?). You have located the correct family though as Margaret Snr's maiden surname was DOAK.
In the 1881 Census, neither James Snr, Jane or James Jnr appear as James Snr died March 1877 and Jane and James would have been in their 20's and making their own ways. It's Margaret Jnr (b. 13 Nov 1859 at Ballantrae - she's shown as 1 Year old on the 1861 Census) I'm REALLY interested in at the present time; I've exhausted her brother, my great-grandfather William.
I wonder if you can locate a Robert McCREADIE in the same house. He was son of James and Margaret and Informant on parents Death Extracts which I have just located - didn't even know of Robert. At the times of James and Margaret's deaths, Robert is living in Stevenston, Ayrshire.
Kindest regards and thanks.

Hello Q98,
Do you have a rough date of birth or age for Robert McCreadie, that would help in search for him.
Jonn.

Hi Jonn
I got these from SP's index. The IGI batch for this period in Ballantrae seems to be only the girls (boys do not seem to have been loaded - sometimes happens with IGI).
This looks like Margaret McCreadie in 1891, having had a couple of illegitimate children and still living at Shellknowe:
Maggie McCreadie 29, b. Jeanie McCreadie 3, b. Ballantrae Charles McCreadie 1, b. Ballantrae Allan Thomson 60, lodger, shoemaker, b. Ballantrae James Tweedie 53, lodger, labourer, b. Ballantrae
Address: Shellknowe, Ballantrae
Son Charles's birth entry:
1889 MCCREADIE CHARLES KEENAN M BALLANTRAE /AYR 579/00 0027
Regards.

Hello Q98, and Monica.
They had a John Mccredie, born 17/Dec/1856. Ballantrae, batch no c115791. i think this youngster died because he is not in Ayrshire, in 1861.

Not 100% on that 1891 Census entry being the right Margaret. Cannot see any sign of the household in 1901 to be able to verify anything at this stage. In the 1901 I can see another Margaret McCreadie, daughter of Thomas, with circa the same birth year/place also living at Shellknowe...so as always, doubts creep in
Regards.

Hi Jonn and MonicaLesl
First to Jonn: I have Robert born circa 1841. He was Informant on parents DCs which provided his address as Stevenston. I then located him in 1891 and 1901 Censuses at Stevenston which provided his age at time of Census. I place him circa 1841. With circa, I allow + or _ three years either side.
Now to MonicaLesl: I am CERTAIN the OPR dates are chrisening dates as my records show Mary christened on 25 Feb 1840 at Ballantrae. Buuut, I like the look of your Maggie McCreadie in 1891, age 29; she MAY WELL BE my great-grandfather's sister who was born on 13 Nov 1859 - we all know about misleading information provided to Census takers.
Apparently, the McCreadie name in Ayrshire was not uncommon although, when I was growing up in Saltcoats (also Ayrshire), I never knew ANYONE outside my family with the McCreadie name.
Many, many thanks for your assistance.

Hi Q98
Robert may have lost some years over the years This looks a possibility for James and Margaret in 1841, family down as MCCREDIE. Writing in italics is as shown on FreeCen, normally meaning that writing was hard to read:
James, fisherman, 25 Margaret, 25 Thomas, 5 (I wonder if this should be Robert) Mary, 1
Address: Village, Ballantrae
And in 1851, everyone showing as born in Ballantrae except for Margaret Snr who was born Girvan:
James McCredie 40 Margaret McCredie 37 Mary McCredie 11 Margaret McCredie 8 David McCredie 6 James McCredie 4 Jean McCredie 3 Mo
Address: Main Street Or Girvan Road, Ballantrae
There is also one possibility for Robert, working away from home:
Robert McCredie, 16, errand boy, b. Ballantrae Address: Carrerie, Ballantrae
Regards.
