St Pancras Deaths before 1837
« on: Monday 31 March 08 18:42 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know how to find details of deaths before the BMD index began? My ancestor Thomas Folkard died in St Pancras between about August 1834 and the start of the BMD index in 1837.  His children were all christened at Old Church St Pancras, (the youngest was christened there in 1835) so he may have been buried there too.
If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.
Many thanks.

Hi Annmarg

Prior to civil registration in 1837 you need to view parish records.   Some information appears on the IGI but not many deaths , I cant see this one. Sad

If you are able to get there you can view the parish records of Old Church St. Pancras at  the London Metroploitan Archives.

If not I think they will do a search for a fee. Undecided Best to contact them and ask

Hi annmarg

I'm going to the LMA the 7oth or 14th April and will add you to my look-up list but it is my intention to do some of the older outstanding requests firsts.

Can I ask how you narrowed the time frame down to 1834-1837?

Hello Dawn,
That's very kind of you, as I know you have replied to several people already.  I know Thomas Folkard died between these dates because his youngest child was born on 29th May 1835, so his father would have been still alive 9 months before that (around August 1834.)  Registration began in the September quarter of 1837 and I have checked every quarter from then up to the 1841 census when his wife Harriet was alone with the children.
Many thanks,

Hi again

Have you found a 'widowed' Harriet in 1851? I'm only asking because relationships and marital status weren't indicated on the 1841 census, could Thomas have been 'away from home' on census night 1841?

Hello again,
Yes, Harriet is described as "widow" in 1851.  There are no Thomas Folkards in BMD who died between 1841 and 1851.
