Hi, would SKP lookup 1841/1851census record for the following please.
I have a record of marriage for; October 29th 1847 All Saints in the parish of Portsea Southampton
Henry Smith full age Labourer living at ? Stainton Street Father George Smith Labourer. Elizabeth Coe Full age also living at ? Stainton/Staunton Street. Father George Coe Labourer.
These records would possibly give me names of this couples parents before they married and also where they lived after they married. Thank You. Victoria

Hi Victoria,
There seems to be no sign of Elizabeth Coe in Hampshire in 1841. Do you have a birth place for her from a later census? Or one for Henry? I think a few more snippets of information might be needed to find them. Do you know the names of any children?

Hmm
Possible I suppose, but there is quite a difference in location between Havant and Portsea. Staunton Street in Portsea is less likely to have an ag lab there. I would have expected him to work in the dockyard or similar. Trying to track them down via the Smiths without a birth place could prove very time-consuming. I cannot find an Elizabeth Coe's baptism in Hampshire, so the possible Essex connection may be worth following up. However, Castle Hedingham records are not in the IGI.
How did you arrive at Elizabeth's maiden name - from a birth certificate of a child? If so where was this child born and where. If it was close to a census perhaps the information on the certificate can be used to get a better fix on them.

Then I suspect that this is your man Henry's baptism:
Henry baptised 20 March 1825, Chalton, parents George & Charlotte.
Sorry, going to be devil's advocate here (I have Smiths in the family too so know the possible pitfalls) - With a name like Smith, how can you be sure that this is the right Henry Smith's marriage in 1847 in an area away from his home?

Victoria,
Sorry, but I may be being slow here. Perhaps I have missed something.
If you only have the maiden name from the marriage certificate and not from Henry junior's birth certificate, can I ask how you know that these are Henry junior's parents?
There was at least one other Henry Smith who married in the same quarter in Portsea and there are several more in the whole of Hampshire around that time.
I still can't quite understand if they are in Catherington in 1861 ( not that close to Portsea) WITHOUT Henry junior, where is Henry junior. I can't see a lone Henry Smith born c1852 in Portsea in 1861.
If you are correct, then Henry goes from being an (agricultural) labourer, to drainpipe maker in 1861 and 1871, but in 1870 for his son's marriage he is a storekeeper? Also young Henry looks as if he has stretched the truth for his marriage - in 1870 he would only have been 18, not 21. I know that happens, but without his birth certificate how are you sure that the 1852 registration is the correct one.
Yours confused Nell

I worked backwards to search for Smith family who came to Liverpool after 1871. I found records as follows.
1871 RG10/1152 Folio 78 Page 19.Alverstoke Hampshire Royal Naval Hospital Henry Smith 21 bn abt 1851 Patient 1871 RG10/1127 Folio 164 Page 35 Portsea Island Kingston Hampshire All Saints Ellen Smith 24 Bn abt 1847 Patient Could this have been couple who married 1870
I have them 1881 living at;
14 Carson Street Liverpool.
The head of the house is named as James Smith but should have been Henry.
James Smith 30 born Portsmouth Dock Lab Ellen wife 31 born Gosport George son ( says 20 but should have been age 2 ) born Liverpool Henry son 7 months born Liverpool
1891 Census 4 House 1 Court Gay Street Liverpool Henry Smith head 35 born Portsmouth labourer Ellen Wife 36 born Gosport Harry son 10 born Liverpool Albert J son 6 born Liverpool Alfred son 5 born Liverpool Transcribed as SMITT Ages are not correct ( for Henry and Ellen ) but this is family
I am not familiar with areas in and around places where Smith family originated from.
Going by census records the family should have been mentioned 1851 & 1861 following their marriage 1847.
Henry was their first born so must have been born approx 1849-1851. Going by his marriage 24/12/1870 age 21 if correct it was 1849. This is the correct couple on marriage certificate as surname " Tyer" was carried on as middle surname throughout family. I think I will send off for copy of Henrys birth certificate. If only family were mentioned on 1851/61 census it would help.
Thanks Nell.

I found record of birth Sept Q 1848 Portsea I Vol 7 Page 128. for Henry James Smith. The record 1871 census says " Henry Smith" in Naval Hospital was born Landport ( ? Portsea ) Also 1881 census Liverpool ? wrongly named James Smith. I wonder if the person who gave information gave his name as Henry James but enumerator only heard James. Just a thought. I am going to have problems getting birth certificate if unsure of mothers` name.

Nell,
I had this reply sent to me from Essex Board.
1841 HO107/322/1 Folio 9 Page 12 North Benfleet
Duckend Farm
COE George 40 Agricultural Labourer Eleanor 35 Elizabeth 15 George 14 Ann 12 William 9 Ellen 6 Alfred 3
This could be Elizabeths` family.
1861 census gives Elizabeths` place of birth as Barnflet Essex
I will take a chance and send off for birth certificate giving Henrys` mothers` name as Elizabeth Coe.
Let you know if I am successful.
