Forge family, sailmakers in Barking
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 12:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi

According to a couple of online family trees, Robert Forge (1720-1778) was married to Ann Shepherd whose son John Forge (1746-1801) carried the long line of sailmakers in Barking.

I have the will (from Nat Archives) of a Robert Forge, sailmaker of Barking, written 18 Jan 1778 and proved 23 Feb 1778. He leaves everything (Stock in Trade, Household Furniture, Plate, Jewels, Debts, Notes, Bonds and Securities for Money) in trust for "Rebecca Elliston now living with me to enable the said Rebecca Elliston to bring up, and support her child which she had by me." No other family members are mentioned at all!

Do I concude that there were two sailmakers called Robert Forge, both of whom died in the same year? Or was there one Robert Forge who disinherited his family? (Maybe the family had already disinherited him!! Grin )

The most frustrating thing about researching this family is that there are no records for St Margaret's, Barking on the IGI, and I don't live in the UK so visiting a record office anywhere is out of the question. (Even my closest LDS family history centre is a plane journey away!) Are there any CDs of the Barking parish records available for purchase?

Cheers

Hi Koromo, I know how difficult it is living outside UK. I have done a little digging on St Margaret's Church. The records are held in two places:
Essex Records Office, Wharf Road Chelsmford. email:ero.enquiry@essexcc.gov.uk

Valance House Museum, Becontree Avenue, Dagenham, 0044 2082 706 865
www.barking.dagenham.gov.uk

Did you know Captain Cook was married there in 1762?

Hi Indaloman

Yes, I did know that about Capt Cook and it certainly makes me feel that Barking has an historical link with NZ.  Cheesy   Pity he didn't have any children!

Thanks for the links for Barking records. My trouble is that I want to browse through the BMDs so I can track family branches, etc. I've also looked at the East of London Fam Hist Soc who seem to have them, but I can't see if I joined if I could get some sort of online access or whatever.

I have a surname only index to baptisms which I prepared from a rudimentary index prepared pre-WW1 by the then priest of St Margaret's, Barking. That rudimentary index was recently proved to have at least one omission - therefore so does mine.
But I've just checked it and it has these baptisms:
1767 Ellistone
1782 Ellistone
1720 Forger
Whether they are yours I don't know (especially Forger ) but they may help you at Valence House

Hi Koromo,

My wife and I were married in Saint Margaret's, a lovely very old Church, but  we now live some 25 miles from Barking. Do you know if any are buried in the yard, if so they may have a headstone.
We don't visit Barking very often now,but if we do I can look for you and  take some photos.

Regards

Oh Sirius, that sounds wonderful!   Cheesy

I would think that any gravestone for a Forge would be part of the family — they were sailmakers (and smack owners) in Barking for 150-ish years and I believe that some of them are buried at St Margaret's.

The direct line includes:
John Forge, died 1726 aged 52, and wife Elizabeth née Harris
Robert Forge, died 1778 aged 58, and wife Ann née Shepherd (and mistress Rebecca Elliston? Wink)
John Forge, died 1801 aged 55, and wife Mary née Stradling
John Forge, died 1833 aged 55, and wife Mary née Haggis

Goodness! It's only since I've typed them out like this that I've realised they all died in their 50s. The last John Forge of the line died up in Grimsby aged 72 — I bet it really did have something to do with the air ... or the refreshments 'cos he became an innkeeper!

Thank you very much for the offer. Any time you are in the mood would be fine by me, and please don't feel under any pressure to do anything at all.

You are welcome Koromo, but it could quite a while before we get to Barking, I only hope the new
church  extention which  was built in 1991 over part of the grave yard did not contain your graves.
My wifes ancestors were in Barking and Grimsby as they were fishermen. Have you looked up the
church on line? quite a bit of info and pictures.

Hi Sirius

Yes, I've searched and read quite a lot about Barking over the last year or so, including why so many ended up at Gorleston with the Short Blue Fleet, or Grimsby because the railway/dock company actively encouraged the fishermen to base themselves up there - as well as the silting up/pollution of the Roding and Thames Rivers ... and to top it all off, my John Forge sailmaker was declared bankrupt in the late 1850s as well!

A site which fascinated me (but had nothing to do with the Forges) was one about a Bennett family, "merchants with relatives and reliable friends ('Cousins') in both Barking and Poole who had for at least three generations run smuggled goods into Dorset and London from their own ships and coastal vessels."

Captain Bennett has a monument in St Margaret's:
http://www.foxearth.org.uk/CaptainBennett.html

If by chance you are in Barking and happen to have a camera with you in the next year or so, and the weather is dry and you've nothing else to do, a photo would be great!  Cheesy

Cheers

Hi Kevan

Thanks for the link to your Barking Trade Directories. I can see a few familiar names in the 1848 and 1855, in fact all the Forges there are 'mine', and a few others who were various spouses, eg. Luke Horsley, victualler at The Still in Fisher St, was married to Rosetta Forge (1811-1884).

Cheers

Hello, Just joined this site.  Have you seen the three volumes of Mr. Frogley's Barking?  There is a wealth of information on the people of Barking.  I have purchased all three for my mother as she is a Barking Girl.  If you have any questions please let me know.  It may take a couple of weeks to get back to you as my mother lives about 70 mile from me.

Hi pmc, welcome to RootsChat!  Smiley

I hadn't heard of those books, but after a quick Google I found a description of them - they sound fascinating. If they have an index and easy to look up, I would be most interested to hear of any references to the Forge family, smack owners, fishermen and sailmakers of Fisher Street.

Happy New Year  Cheesy

All,
Excellent books, I treated myself to them for Christmas, too. I am yet to find time to read them properly, but a description can be found here, to aid in finding material in the manuscripts -

Best for the new year
