Hi Wozzle
Orr Vale isn't appearing on any city maps in present or past. However I think is worth getting in touch with the City Council as they will hold all past records - planning department I think is best bet. I've done same with Renfrewshire Council because places have disappeared where my lot used to live and they found them for me.
Here is there email addy http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet
Good Luck!

Hi Wozzle,
I have searched the address on 1841 to 1901 census returns and no result. I have also checked old maps.co.uk, and can find no address. Can this be the name of one of the large houses in the area? Sorry could not help.

Hi Wozzle,
Whinrig Restaurant, 7.9 miles from West Linton (Peeblesshire) 01314493848 Mansfield Road, Balerno, EH14 7JX From the Evening News, Eaterie swallowed up A RESTAURANT near the Capital is set to be knocked down to make way for a house.
The former Whinrig restaurant on Mansfield Road in Balerno is to be demolished and a house and garage built in its place
after planning chiefs approved the plans, subject to a series of conditions.

Hi wozzle,
http://www.buittle.org.uk/sailors.htm
THE Water of Orr is called the River Urr by modern geographers, but why they changed its spelling it would he difficult to say. It is also called the Winding Orr because of its numerous bends and twistings, and its valley is called "The Lovely Vale of Orr'," well known in song and story.

Hi Wozzle
Orrvale, Balerno was a small street in the middle of the old village and my father told me that it was named after his Great Grandmother, Euphemia (Messer) Orr. In 1901 Euphemia was living in Smith's Buildings, Balerno. I assume that she was still there when the council decided to knock down the old houses and put up new housing. My GG Grandmother didn't want to leave her old house and stubbornly refused to move. I think her house was the last one standing in the row but, of course, the authorities won in the end and she had to move out. But the new street was named Orrvale in recognition of her last stand, so to speak. She died in Orrvale in 1924.

In reply to the last post, Euphemia Orr (nee Messer) of Balerno, d. 1924 was also my GG grandmother. Her son, William Orr was my G Grandfather, and his son, David Orr my Grandfather. It would be great to get in touch, or get any more information about this family line.

Hello Rowan43
I am the great granddaughter of Helen ORR (1869-1962), daughter of Euphemia (Messer) ORR. I have a lot of bmd information about the ORRs. I can't put my email address on here and need to work out a way to contact you via your email address, off list. There is a way. I just don't know yet how to do it!

Hi Rhoda, It was great to get your quick response - I'm looking forward to making contact, but unfortunately for some reason, it won't allow me to view your personal message - says I've exceeded my personal limit of messages ?? Perhaps I, too, need to make 3 postings to receive your PM?
