Ancestors of mine (Charles Frederick Watts and his wife Ann) immigrated to Cape Town in Sept 1859 aboard the Lord Raglan. Deos anyone know whether any additional info, perhaps on the British side (emigration side) could be available to get more info on these people?

Hi there, Your first step would be to apply to the archives for a copy of the death notice - there are 2 Charles Frederick - presumably it would be the first one in 1910. Check out the free BMD in the UK I think there is a marriage for a Charles and Ann Stanley in 1857 in Colchester. Ruth

I see from the Ancestry site that you already have the info about Ann Stanley and Charles - you now need to investigate this on the England boards - which I now see that you have done. Please, in future, would you post as much info as you already know and exactly what you are looking for on this site so we dont waste precious time searching for info you already have. It would also be great to have a follow up message when you have complteted ( does it ever get there? ) your query so I can mark it complete. Every few months I go right through the board seeing if i can find any new information for folk. So it just helps with my housekeeping. Thanks Ruth

Hello Ruth. Yes, you're of course right. Here is the info I have: Charles Frederick: born ca June 1836 in Eastwick, Herts. to James Watts and Mary Watts (nee Nash). Ann Stanley: born ca 1835. No more info, except father's name John Stanley and he was farmer in 1857 at the time of her marriage to Charles.
They married 23/2/1857 in Colchester. (I found this the hard way trying to find an Ann Stanley with same Vol/page as a Charles Frederick Watts. Is there any other way to see both spouses at the same time on BMD records??Using Freebmd just type the spouses first name - very quick1)) I have the marriage cert. copy from GRO. It lists Ann's address as something like "Wivenham" but one or two letters were hard to deduce. It lists Charles' address as Greenshead.
I know that this Charles is the correct one from his death notice in Cape Town Archives: It listed his former UK address (they say birthplace but this was of course incorrect given UK 1841 census info) as 10 Church Lane Enfield and parents James Watts and Mary ("Watts"). Wife ann Stanley (died 15 March 1907) was also listed. Charles died Nov 1910 as you said. It was in Rosebank Cape Town.
One last weird piece of info: Ann and Charles's baby Charles was born 8 May 1859) I've got birth cert from GRO. It lists her name as Ellen Watts formerly Stanley! And birthplace Enfield Highway, Edmonton. Registration was 17 June 1859. This was days before their departure for Cape Town as the Lord Raglan took something like two months to get to SA, and it arrived 23/9/1859 in Cape Town.
That's what I've got. Any ideas?

Oh and there is no death notice for Ann (Ellen?) in any of SA's archive repositories. I looked for Ellen Watts/Stanley and Ann Watts/Stanley.

If she had no property or goods she would not have a death notice. However the Cape archive records on NAAIRs are not complete - have you checked the hand written ones in the Family history centres? You are fortunate to have the death date so it gives you a time frame to check. Unfortunately I dont have access to Ancestry.com or findmypast as I have let these lapse. I have most of my UK relies and time restraints prevent me from looking to hard for the really dead ones. (I am not on strike but am affected by it as our school has been forced to close for the last 3 weeks - next week I am on holiday!!!) Try looking for Ann's father in the 1861 census as a farmer and try and backtrack. so aorry I cant help you there. Ruth

Hi there, Are still in the Western Cape? The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints all have family history centres - you do not have to be a member - and these places have the most amazing resources including microfilms of church records. i know the Natal branch are transcribing all the marriages that have taken place in Natal. Check out your local phone book and give them a call. Ruth
