Can anyone help? (Sorted - thanks)
« on: Wednesday 20 June 07 13:03 BST (UK) »

Hello

Don't know if anyone can help for a birth record for a THOMAS JOHNSTON, born 1845 in Armathwaite, Cumbria.  I have found him on later censuses as living with his wife and children and his mother Ann was living with them as well.  She was born in Ravenglass, Cumbria in around 1816.

Would be interested to know if anyone could find his fathers name or a marriage recorfd for Thomas and his wife Annie (born around 1843), who is listed as being from Ireland.

Long shot I know, but worth a try! Thanks

I'm guessing that Armathwaite will come under Penrith Registration district but it isn't acually listed as such.
There is a suitable marriage Q4 1871 to an Ann Bird. You say you have found him living with mother and children. How old is the eldest child? Does it correspond to late 1871, early 1872?  If so it may be worth sending for certificate as fathers name will be on there.
Don't see a suitable birth registered in Penrith for 1845. Only 1844 and 1846 but if you are taking his birth year off a census, they weren't always accurate so it may be worth sending for both certs and specifying mothers name. That way you only pay for the search if her names not right.

Hi both  Smiley

There's also this possible marriage:
March 1868
Whitehaven 10b 715
Thomas Johnston to possibly Annie McGill

Tanja  Smiley

(they have one child, Eliza age 1 born Whitehaven, on the 1871 census)

Hi both

Thanks for your replies.

I think it is probably the second one - Annie MCGill as I know they had a daughter Eliza in 1870 and were living in Whitehaven.

Thanks so much for your help

Don't know if anyone can help for a birth record for a THOMAS JOHNSTON, born 1845 in Armathwaite

Are you sure it's Armathwaite?  It's not uncommon to find Arrowthwaite - part of Whitehaven/Preston Quarter - transcribed as Armathwaite.

There's a Thomas JOHNSTON 3 Whitehaven in the 1851 census - but his mother was Mary Sad

Thomas JOHNSTON 7 Whitehaven in Cockermouth - mother Sarah.

Thomas JOHNSTON 7 Whitehaven in Muncaster - with BOWS grandparents -  daughter Ann was apparently bap 1814 Muncaster (IGI).

There is a possible marriage which may be worth following up ...

Marriages Dec 1842
Bell    Joseph        Whitehaven    25   188
BOWES    Ann         Whitehaven    25   188
CASSON    John         Whitehaven    25   188
Johnston    James         Whitehaven    25   188
LANCASTER    Sarah         Whitehaven    25   188
Scott    Mary         Whitehaven    25   188

Muncaster is very close to Ravenglass.

Ann JOHNSTON (mar) 35 Ravenglass was visiting someone in Hensingham (1851)

You may have trouble with the birth of Thomas

Births Jun 1843
JOHNSTON    Thomas         Whitehaven    25   1[60]2
JOHNSTONE    Thomas         Whitehaven    25   152
Births Jun 1844
JOHNSTON    Thomas         Whitehaven    25   133
Births Sep 1844
Johnston    Thomas         Whitehaven    25   154
Births Dec 1844
JOHNSTON    Thomas         Whitehaven    25   146

1861
Arrowthwait
Ann JONSTONE (mar) 45 Householder, Ravenglass (no husband in sight)

That's very interesting Geoff, as Thomas had a daughter, my (several greats) grandmother who was called Anne Bowes Johnston.

I thought it was odd that he was from Armathwaite, as future generations were from Whitehaven, so that's another mystery solved.

Thanks for your help

It would also make more sense with mother Ann coming from Ravenglass. It's along way from Ravenglass to the Eden valley even on L'all Ratty.
If you are confused by our local dialect google l'all ratty and all will become clear.
