**COMPLETED GERMANY: Shurley- Braunsbach, Wurttemberg**
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 10:07 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

I am researching my mother's side of the family and one of her ancestors was born in Braunsbach, Wurttemberg. I was hoping if anyone could give me a website about family history in Wurttemberg. Also, I am having trouble actually determining when she emigrated to England. Her name is Maria "M?" Barbara Shürley and was born on the 1st April 1844 (April Fool's Tongue). I know she has a brother, John. Is there a site I could go to about German immigrants to England? Any help with sites would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braunsbach - here's the wiki page for Braunsbach.
http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/BAD-WUE/BW.html - general info about genealogy in Baden-Württemberg.
http://www.auswanderer-bw.de/auswanderer/index.php?sprache=en&suche=1 - emigrants.

Ship records were not kept in the UK for ships arriving from Europe.  Interestingly, I can see John Shurley in the 1881 census in York - wife Elise also from Wurttemberg, eldest child in 1881 is Pauline, 13, b. Hull.  The timing suggests the family might have left around the time of the Austro-Prussian war?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austro-Prussian_War
(There is also a Christian 'Shirley' listed in Yorkshire in 1881, like John a pork butcher and b. Wurttemberg.  Another brother?)

http://www.norwayheritage.com/articles/templates/voyages.asp?articleid=28&zoneid=6 - also Hull was a port where some ships from Europe came in, people then going down to Liverpool to board ships going onwards to the US and Canada.  They may have been intending to go to the US but found work in the UK and decided to stay.

The LDS have microfilmed some church records for Braunsbach.  Do you know the religion of this family?

The spelling of the last name might have originally been 'Schürle'?

The family are also on the 1871 census, so probably arrived in the 1860's as I havent yet found them on 1861 census...

Checked freebmd for 'Schurle', I find:
Johann Friedrich Schurle, married Sep q. 1865 in Hull.  Elise is 'Elise Caroline Niderl__thier   '
Maria Magdalena B Schurle, married 1873 in Hull;

Also I think I've spotted what might be their mother?  If somebody could have a quick peek for these in the 1871...
1881,    33 Moxon St Kingston-upon-Hull
Margaret Bosse, head, widow, 57, b. Brannsbach, Germany, charwoman
Amelia, dau, 16, b. Hull
Caroline Hurley, 70, mother, widow, b. Kooher... Staten, Germany (widow of sailor).

A Caroline Shurley died later in 1881, in Hull (freebmd).
A Frederick Julius Bosse married possibly Margaret Sherle or Sturle (spellings as in freebmd), 1860 in Hull
He may have died (as 'Julius Bosse') in 1871 (again, from freebmd)

Elise Caroline's surname in the actual index appears to be Niederleithner, and in the 1891 theres this family, I wonder if they are related -

Thank you all for your help. I am mainly focussed on Maria Barbara Shurley as she was my 3rd great-grandmother. I now know that one of her middle names was Magdalena. I have no idea about the religion. However I have an inkling that with the name, Maria Magdalena Barbara Schurle, she may be Catholic. Thanks for the links. I believe that the surname Schurle will help with my further research.  Grin Maybe the surname was Anglicised when they came to England.  Smiley

Hi,

I found out when the brother of Maria came out to England. I noticed the Schuerle spelling, it has made me think about varying the surname when searching. So far it has changed from Shurley, Schurle etc.

Name: Schuerle, Johann Friedrich
Birth Date: 29 Sep 1840

Why are you assuming she may have been Catholic? Lots of girls called Magdalena, Maria & Barbara are all found in my family connections in Germany and they were all Protestant not Catholic.

I think she was Catholic, but I really do not have any idea of her religion. I am researching all areas.

Her marriage certificate should hopefully clear this point up, as it will tell you which church she married in (unless she had a registry office marriage).

The emigration record is interesting because I don't think Braunsbach was in Künzelsau district.  (At least, it's not today).  It's nearby, though - perhaps the family moved to a larger town before they emigrated?
