Would like to find the place where WALTER ROSS was born. Birth date abt 1804 or 1809 in Inverness?
Walter married Catherine McDonald in 1848 in Petty. Would really love to have his parents names. I did find him on the 1851 - 1861 census. He had died before the 1871 census. Not sure where his is buried, maybe somewhere in Gollanfield, Inverness. Catherine was a tenant at the Brackley Farm in Gollanfield since their marriage.

Hi Aley,

There are only 28 records all told for the death of a Walter ROSS between 1861 and 1871 on the (pay per view) ScotlandsPeople site at:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Limiting the search to people born 1806 +/- 10 years (and including unrecorded ages because a proportion of the death indexes between 1855 and 1865 did not include ages though they are on the actual certificate) gets only 5 hits.

Refining the search further finds that just 1 of the records is in Petty, that it was in 1862, and that the person's age was 58.

If you download that certificate (and hoping that it is the right Walter) you should at least learn his parents' names - name and occupation of father, name and maiden surname of mother.  That might lead you to further information.

Hi again Aley,

You say you found Walter in 1851 and 1861.  What was his birthplace on those censuses?

Given that your Walter ROSS married in Petty in 1848, there is a possibly interesting entry for a Walter ROSS in 1841 on FreeCEN.

Balenldrich, Petty/Nairn, Inverness-shire
SCT1841/106/ED 1/Folio 7/Page 3
ROSS Walter, 30, Farmer, born Outside Census County
FALCONAR Margreat, 65, b Nairn
ROSS Margreat, 10, Female Servant, b OUC
MCKAY Alexr, 15, Ag Labourer, b Nairn

Thinking that Margreat FALCONAR might well be the mother of this Walter, I searched for the birth of a Walter ROSS mother Margreat FALCONAR.

Walter ROSS, b 2 Feb, bap 12 Feb 1807, Abernethy & Kincardine, Moray, parents William ROSS & Margaret FALCONER.

Unfortunately, the only marriage I can find of a William ROSS & a Margaret FALCONER is in 1824 (Huh) in Dyke, Morayshire.

The only births in the IGI to a William ROSS & a Margaret FALCONER are Charlotte ROSE bap 1795 in Nairn, Nairn-shire (this is an LDS submission) then, the following extracted entries all in Abernethy & Kincardine, Moray-shire - John ROSS b 1797, Margret ROSE b 1799 and Walter ROSS b 1807 (and the following, with mother's name as Margaret ROSS, may also be theirs - William ROSS b 1801).

It will be interesting to hear what Walter's birthplace was in 1851 and 1861, and what the Petty death cert says (re name of wife and names of parents) if you download it.

Hi Aley and JAP

Aley, was Walter married before his marriage to Catherine MacDonald in 1848. There is a child showing with them in 1851, Isabella age 5 b. Croy, Nairn (1861 her birth place shows as Petty).

There is however a submitted entry on IGI for an Isabella Ross b. circa 1844 to parents Walter Ross and Elizabeth Falconer (although going by her age in 1851 this would be closer to 1846) and an OPR entry for a marriage for a couple with these names:

WALTER ROSS Marriages:Spouse:     ELIZABETH FALCONER
Marriage: 02 DEC 1842  Petty, Inverness, Scotland

Two other children show to this couple: William b. 06 JUL 1844  and Janet b. 24 AUG 1845, both in Petty

Walter is showing a birth place of Abernethy in 1851/61. So, JAP, your details regarding possible parents (William Ross and Margaret Falconer) are looking good.

As always, only his death cert. will provide full verification of his parents' names if known to the person reporting his death.

Regards.

Monica

Hi Monica and thank you

I did find Walter Ross and Elizabeth Falconer as Isabella's parents but wasn't sure.

Didn't have their marriage info and didn't know they had other children.
I can not order his death cert. at this time.
The names, Walter and William runs in the family.

Thank you Jap

Don't know what happen but I sent you a reply but I can't see it here.

Just as Monica said Walter b. on census was Abernethy, Inverness.
William Ross & Margaret Falconer you found could be Walter's parents. Looks promising.

Walter's son Walter b. 1858 named his last son; WILLIAM ALEXANDER FALCONER ROSS.
My husband thinks that a cool name.

Aley,

I refined the parameters on the free search on ScotlandsPeople for Walter ROSS's death by adding FALCONER for his mother's maiden name - still gets the 1 hit i.e. a search for ROSS Walter, mother's maiden name FALCONER, year 1862, age 58, district Petty gets one hit (I didn't download the result).

Do you know when Catherine died?  Her age and birthplace in censuses?  Her mother's maiden name?  A free search on SP finds the following possibility - ROSS Catherine, other name MACDONALD, year 1905, age 75, district Petty (I didn't download the result - which might well include her mother's maiden name).

It will be interesting to know what you find on the death certs when you are able to get them.  I'm unsure whether you've used SP.  You need to register (free) to conduct searches.  If you wish to download results of BDM or census searches, purchase of credits is necessary - 6 pounds sterling for 30 credits.  To download a page of search results costs 1 credit.  To download a certificate image costs 5 credits.

Hi Jap

Thank you again.

It looks like you found his parents. Petty district is the last place he lived. So that's him.

I was giving these dates for Catherine's birth, 1820, 1821, 1828. On the census has birth place Cory, Nairn.  Not sure who gave me this.

Could be her.
Catherine Rose McDonald b. May 26 1821  in Cory, Nairn
christening, June 14, 1821
Parents: Hugh McDonald & Margaret Wilson.

Just found.

In the LIBINDX ( Local History Services in Moray ) has this;

Catherine Ross (nee McDonald )
death 1905, place of death Brackely Farm Gollanfield
Spouse name; Walter Ross

You have her age at time of death as 75 but on the 1901 census she is with her son Walter and has her age as 74.

On the census that was given to me over the years has Catherine age different. This is what I mean.

1851 age 31, 1861 age 38, 1871 age 44, 1881 age 53, 1891 age 70 and 1901 age 74.
Isn't this confusing

Hi Aley,

Sorry!  75 was a typo - should have read 79.

I tried adding mother's maiden name WILSON but no luck - but that may just mean that Walter (assuming he was the informant) didn't know his Gran's maiden surname.  I also tried the middle name of Rose - again no luck.  You would have to purchase (download) the certificate to see the name (Hugh?) of Catherine's father.

The birth you quoted is an LDS submission - but there are a couple of births in Petty to a Hugh MC DONALD & a Margaret WILSON (Eliza 1815 and James 1817).

Interestingly, there is a death in Petty (found by refining parameters on a free search on ScotlandsPeople) of a Margaret MCDONALD, other name WILSON, in 1855 (unfortunately it's an entry where the age was not indexed - you would have to purchase the certificate to see the age and further information).

And there is a possibility for Catherine and a mother Margaret (unfortunately relationships not given in the 1841 and ages rounded down) in the 1841 census on FreeCEN.
SCT1841/106/ED4/Folio4/Page 10
Fishertown, Petty, Inverness-shire
The household of a farmer MUNRO includes the following:
MCDONALD Catharine 20, female servant, b Inverness-shire
MCDONALD Margaret 45, occupation and birthplace blank.

Walter Ross born 2 Feb 1807 was son of William Ross Abernety and Kincardine, Moray (died 1862) and his wife Margaret Falconer.
Margaret Falconer (born 1773) was daughter of William Falconer and Margaret Cameron at Torrich and Geddes, Nairn.
William Falconer born 10 May 1730 was son of John Falconer (b abt 1690 and died after 1754) at Bellone of Geddes, and then perhaps Reriach, and his wife Ann McLean.
The Falconers had been farming at Belone of Geddes since at least mid 17th century, when an Alexander (father or grandfather of John and Colin there beginning 18th century was possessor).
So here is part of your family history! At what point did your family emigrate and where to?
