Not sure if this is any use but Hampshire RO has this Will:

Oh well done Shaun!

I looked through the enumerator's schedules until I found it.  It did look like Vienna, but I didn't want to suggest it, just in case.

Yes that is brilliant but I am looking for (what now appears to be) Vienna ROW- not cottage, it is definitely ROW and no cottage name or number given unfortunately.   But it would appear from all the info. you have all given me that Viensia is in fact Vienna.  So it must be in that area.   Very many thanks for everyone you have made this site come up trumps once again!

There is this old post on RootsWeb concerning John Wheeler and Maria Benger of Vienna Row Lymington in 1838:

I found the 1841 page where Nell found Vienna Row earlier. The previous page is clearer I think. HO107/393/6 folio 55 page 6

Hi Marj

I suspect Vienna Row is/was a row of cottages in Bridge Rd near Vienna Cottage, if they are still there you never there might be a faint plaque saying Vienna Row even if they are no longer known as such. If you like I can take a look next week when I visit my parents.

Shaun - you are BRILLIANT! Cool Cool

That old post you found refers to my Wheeler family - most of which I have and agree, just didn't know about  Robert  who emigrated to South Africa.   I am now going to try and contact the sender - I do hope she still has the same email address!    And, of course , this confirms the Vienna Row link.

I am so thrilled!

Thank you so very much

Hi Jan

I would love you to have a look if at all possible.   I do actually live in Hampshire but am unable to travel so do appreciate your very kind offer.  (Just hope the weather is a little better than today!)

Thank you so much

Hi Shaun

After all that excitement I am now feeling very deflated!  I contacted Roots Web (not a site I've used before) to try and contact the sender but unfortunately her email address is no longer recognised!  I suppose it was a long shot I couldn't find anything else from her after Nov. 2004.   But at least I have another side of the family to follow -

And sorted the address I wanted in Lymington!

Many thanks to everyone.

Sorry to hear that Marjorie but there are an awful lot of defunct email addresses on these sites. I had a similar experience this morning - I found a surnames list with Gale in Lymington ( one of my interests) on it, sent an email to the contact address and had it bounce back on me as address unknown. Annoying isn't it.

Hi Bearkat - Thank you for that, they could be related to Maria Benger.  However, according to the 1841 census Maria (nee Benger) was born in 1820/21 - however I believe that ages were rounded up or down to the nearest 5 in 1841 census, so I suppose she could have been born earlier, or of course, Simon may not have been the father.

Many thanks I will keep on file and try and follow up.

Hi Marj
I will go and look in the area of Vienna Cottage next time I'm in Lymington but it won't be this week.
Cheers

Hi Shaun - thanks for that.       I wonder what the connection with Vienna was?

Lyn S very kindly went to Lymington and sent me photos of Vienna Cottage and the railway line a couple of doors away! There apparently was no indication of Vienna Row (or presumably Vienna Place).     But I am quite happy that this was, if not the actual spot, at least very close to where my family lived.

Many thanks for your interest,

Marj
