Hallo Janan

Thank you for the offer but, in fact, Lyn S very kindly took some photos of Vienna Cottage which she has sent me, she somehow managed to take some brilliant photos presumably between the heavy downpours.

But thank you so much for the offer

Hi Marj,
Glad Lyn was able to do that for you Cheesy I would imagine Vienna Row/Place may well have been demolished when the railway was built.

Janan's probably right about the railway. It was constructed 1856-1858.

Does anyone know any further details about Simon Benger??

A Jane HEWITT married Simon BENGER, a mariner, of Lymington.  They had a son Charles, baptised in Boldre in 1814.  Jane was widowed by 1817 and living in Lymington.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat.  Smiley

Simon appears to have been buried 27 Aug 1817 in Fawley, aged 24.

I'm afraid I cannot find where he was born/baptised.  Sad

Mariners are a nuisance.  Undecided

They tend to come from much further afield than neighbouring parishes.

Benger isn't a common surname in Hampshire.  There are plenty in Wiltshire though.

Thanks for your replies - much appreciated!   Where did you find the information about where he was buried?

I believe he was born about 1790 in Hampshire England.

Thanks

Do you know if Simon was born on the Isle of Wight or could have been non-conformist or Catholic?

I believe Simon Benger was born in Hampshire.

Where did you find out he was a mariner?

The information I have was he was a flour miller, married Jane Hewett on 10th August, 1813 and they had three children - Charles and twins Mary Ann & Maria.

I found the information in a book called Comyn's New Forest, a Directory of the reisdents of Boldre 1817.

It lists Jane as daughter of William & Mary HEWITT who were living at Lymington Undershore.  Jane's married name is BENGER and she is widowed and living at Lymington.  There is a note to say that she married Simon BENGER, a mariner, of Lymington.  They had a son Charles baptised 12 June 1814 at Boldre.

Thanks again.

I've had a look at the FindMyPast site although I couldn't find Simon Benger??

Does anyone know where I can buy/borrow a copy Comyn's New Forest?

Comyn's New Forest
Jude James (1982). Size A4 186pp.
A classical reference book recording the 1817 population and buildings of the Parishes of Boldre & Brockenhurst. The original notes and maps have been both copied in their original form and rewritten. The book contains more recent photographs of many buildings recorded and many interesting observations.

Published by C.J. Newsome & Associates

ISBN 0 906742 01 3

Sadly it is now out of print.  Sad

You should be able to get a copy through inter-library loan.

Thanks - not sure how I will go with the inter-library loan as I'm in Australia and so far I have been unable to find it at any library.
