 How do I find out what regiment my grandfather served in during the first world war? I guess he signed up in Dumfries where he lived ,he was born in 1888 so he would have been 26 in 1914. I have an old photograph of him in uniform but cannot make out details.

Have you tried the National Archives website? There's 50 results for Hugh Kerr, but only one with W as a middle initial. You can download the medal card for a cost of £3.50 but I don't think they contain anything that would verify it's your Hugh. Sad
