Everend Flower b 1824 COMPLETED for now!
« on: Monday 25 June 07 08:29 UTC (UK) »

Hi folks - there is a name to conjure with! Everend Flower - not too many of those to the pound!
he was my dad's great Uncle - but I don't think he ever knew that though.
Now, I know quite a lot about Everend and his descendants
his wife was Martha grant b 1826 Leicester,
they had 14 children at the last count.
Everend's (sometimes on a census as Everard) father was Robert b c 1800 Leics.
I have no wife for him
and no other children apart from Everend.
On RC there are quite a lot of Flower, but none of any of mine on anybody else's tree.
I would really like to know anything else anybody can find out about him please.
Everend's son William Robert b mar 1870 Leics was my dad's uncle by marriage (married Ellen Wigston b 1872 Leics)  and they had 6 children - all girls! and as you know that makes life difficult too! and they are a bit too modern to appear on census returns etc.
This is one of the last branches of our tree to get to grips with.
I'd love to find descendants too.
lots of unknowns here, so any help really appreciated.
thanks

Hello Mike
Thanks for your help again!
That certainly is Everend and Martha. I wonder if that Robert was his father? Good to have a name for his mother, and I wonder if those two are brothers and sisters of Martha as witnesses - or brother and sister in law?
Isn't it great how by getting one bit of information, you get set off on the trail for something else? That's the thrill of the research isn't it?  Cool
still need to find some brothers and sisters for Everend now!
thanks again mIke, that was a great help - good to get things confirmed.
regards

Hi Mike -
I'm back in action, as you will realise from my other postings.
I've printed this lot out and will study it along with my tree and see where I get.
My trees are on my laptop and everything else on my pc - quite useful to be able to have tree open at the same time as these on line resources!
I'll get back to you when I check this lot through.
kind regards

Hi Mike Smiley
What a lot of work I've been doing on this Flower thread with all the information you found for me Cool.
Where shall I start?
well, Rbt b 1737 and his brother Linthwaite b 1723 -
I know they are mine! Their father was Robert Flower (surprise surprise!) and I've just found his wife - Jane Linthwaite bpt 7 April 1684 St Martin's leicester, her parents John L and Susannah.
Rbt and Jane Married 1702 Long Caxton.
so thats where the unusual name comes from.
Got it on ancestry by looking at the Leics and Rutland registers.
There were lots of other Robert's there too. Not sure I understand "index of wills" "calendar of wills" etc.

All the death records you gave me I worked backwards and got their birth years, looked on LDS and ancestry etc and worked out who the parents of some of them are. But There is masses of work to do here. Thank you so much.
One day i shall have to get to leicester and look at some of these places.
Do the churches of St mary's, st martins, st mary de castro still exist? Do they have cemeteries around them?

with many thanks for all your help.
I think 1684 is the earliest I have on any branch of my trees, and I ahve her parents too! What a thrill Cool Cool
bye for now

Greeting’s Again Rev’d Mother…….

St. Mary’s became Mary De Castro.

Yes St. Mary De Castro & St. Martin’s still stand
And are very close to each other so easy walking between them.

St. Mary De Castro dates back to 1107.
When it was the Chapel to the Leicester Castle.
But it seems it was built on an earlier site of a Saxon Church.
It’s unusual in that it has TWO Naves…..
The Boy King Henry VI was knighted here 1426.
During the same period
It’s believed that Geoffrey Chaucer married his 1st.Wife here
Plus Richard III’s body rested here after his death on the Battle field of Bosworth 1485.
The grave yard is on the North side of the Church.

St. Martin’s dates back to 1600’s…..
But only became the Cathedral in 1927.
Before this St. Margaret’s held that distinction.
The graveyard which was in front of the Main entrance was paved over and a fountain placed within it to make a “Place of Peace”
The headstones being place up against the walls of the Cathedral.
An earlier grave yard lays to the west side again covered by the now Visitors Centre which connects to the ancient Timbered Guild Hall.

If you do visit then I could make St. Martin’s the first port of call
Followed by Mary De Castro which I think is the more beautiful of the two
Also there is the Castle Gardens which runs besides the River Soar.

Pictures of both Churches can be found via Goggle.
